Just finished making and eating this. It was fantastic! I did several deviations from the recipe. I minced 2 cloves of garlic and tossed them in with the onions just before they were done.
I ran the oven at 400 and baked them for about a hour rather than 45 minutes. Also I removed the parchment paper for the last 15 minutes or so which allowed the top to brown up a bit. It turned out exactly like Tylers. When I flipped them over on the plate the bottom was nice and crispy and looked awesome!!
I impressed myself the way it looked! The flavor was great! I can see where you could go alot of different directions with this recipe. Bacon, cheese, green onions etc.

Did not come out as crispy and I agree it was missing something. I think I'll increase the heat next time and add a little more seasoning. Made some great hash browns the next morning adding some more salt and pepper, cheddar cheese, bacon and green onions.

This recipe was missing something.....taste and technique. I did not see the TV Show so maybe something got left out of the dot com version. After 2 unsuccessful attempts using Tyler's recipe and prep steps with the parchment paper, etc. I followed the suggestions of Monica of West Liberty, OH posted back on 1-21-2010. Thanks to Monica, many russet potatoes were spared another ruin!

Powerful flavor permeation! Something magic happens with this recipe -- the potatoes infuse with overwhelming deliciousness. Thank u, Tyler for this one. I'm just building my favorite recipe repertoire, and this is a KEEPER! Hubby couldn't stay out of this one!

Didn't come out crispy as his did and it took longer to cook. Maybe temp needs to be upped a bit. it also made a ton so I'll half it next time (only 2 of us will eat it. Felt it needed more seasoning and I added more salt, pepper, and a seasoning blend but it was still a bit bland. Might add blue cheese crumbles and bacon on top next time and increase the heat to crisp it up a bit more. Still, it tasted ok and we ate all of it. I did skillet cook it the next day and made a sauce using cheddar, cream cheese, and sour cream and added green onions and bacon to it.

I again only caught part of the show; I have to work with four different people so I used yams on half of the dish with butter (white potatoes on the other half. When I flipped it on to the plate it gave everyone a chance to choose the type they liked.

This was great, and easy. I just added a little ham. And Teflon is fine in the oven. It doesn't become a problem until it's hotter than 500 F. In fact, it's much more likely to get overheated on the stove burner than in the oven. Because of the binders sometimes used, just keep the oven under ~400F.
