This is NOT chili. This is ground beef flavored with a mustard and ketchup mixture. This was NASTY, and the only way I was able to choke down 1/2 of the beef hot dog was to scrape the ketchup and mustard mix off the dog before taking a bite. If anyone thinks that this is "chili," you just need to go buy a can of Hormel to compare real chili to this "stuff."

Yes, this was sooooo sweet. It wasn't that bad, but not old fashion chili. So if you want a chili dog, make the chili you like. I also substituted some catsup with fire roasted tomatoes and it was still too sweet. So use less catsup, more chili and garlic.

I made this recipe a few days ago. I have been searching for a good chili sauce for hot dogs because the canned sauces are not that good. It was good but too sweet for my taste. It would make a really good base for Sloppy Joe's. I will try this recipe again but I am going to experiment with it. Less ketchup and perhaps some tomato sauce to cut the sweetness. A little more garlic and chili powder. I might try the suggestion of one poster and use a can of fire-roasted tomatoes although that might make it spicier than I care for but it's worth a try.

This has become a favorite of mine. Everyone seems to really enjoy it. This is such a simple recipe and can easily be doubled or even tripled. I use a bit more garlic in mine, and a little less ketchup but that's the beauty of this recipe. You can season to your taste. It's a great basic recipe for chile.

We keep this in the freezer for a quick chili dog fix. We did modify the basic recipe a bit but note this is for hot dogs and not meant to be chili in a bowl kind of chili. Our version is not as sweet so if that is your issue, try this. Strain a small can of fire roasted tomatoes into your measuring cup and puree with a hand held blender. Add ketchup to equal the 2 1/2 cups called for in the recipe. This cuts back on some of the sweetness and adds some smokey taste We cook ours low and slow in a small crock pot and add more chili powder if needed.

I must agree with all those who said the chili was more like a sloppy joe. I am a purist when it comes to chili and make a chili colorado that contains no tomatoes, much less tomato ketchup. Just use soaked and pureed ancho chilies, minced onions, garlic, toasted and ground cumin, salt, pepper, and oregano along with ground sirloin for a rich smooth chili.
No need to go for the beef franks either, the regular Ballpark Franks that contain pork have a better flavor.

This was so bad. I only used 2 cups of ketchup and it was still too much. More like a sloppy joe than chili. I am hoping that I can add more meat and water and salvage some of it.

I wanted a chili dog recipe not a sloppy joe recipe. I'm still on a search for a good chili dog recipe.

Terrible!! Just ketchup & mustard with a little other seasoning. Not enough flavor! We didn't even eat it after we made it. I expected more!
