This coleslaw takes the gold in my house. The other day my husband wanted me to make coleslaw like one he had as kid-- sour and not a bit sweet. I searched the Net for a such a recipe and found Tyler's spicy take on a bbq staple. No, it's not that sour stuff his grandma used to make. Instead it's inventive with red chile and chile sauce heating things up and taking the coleslaw from ordinary to extraordinary. My hard-to-please "I know what I like and that's the only way it can be done" husband even broke from tradition and gobble dit up. My kids didn't run from the table at the sight of the chile (no, they wanted in their lunch the next day.
To be honest, I didn't measure a thing-- which I think it great. Iif you can just throw it together and it STILL turns out great, then you've got a good recipe on your hand.

I made this cole slaw to accompany ribs - too much lemon juice along with the vinegar - and the dijon gave it a 'sour' taste - rather than the pungent taste that I like - I grew up in the Chesapeake Bay area. I detest the sweet slaw of the midwest, and the 'chewed up' texture. I always use a mandolin to get nice thin ribbons of cabbage and carrots and peppers. Next time, I will leave out the lemon juice (or maybe just a teaspoon for 'brightness' and adjust to taste with cider vinegar. I tried to adjust using more than a pinch of sugar and then some honey - but it wasn't an effective fix - the acidity of the lemon just overpowered all.

I am NOT a big fan of cole slaw. Living in Virginia, when you order a pulled pork sandwich, you are going to get some and after a while, it becomes necessary.

Every time I have pulled pork sandwiches at home, I try to find a new cole slaw recipe. Now, I've found a KEEPER! I actually love this slaw. I made it exactly as written but used a habanero pepper as it was what I had. WOW, what a kick!

This is the recipe I'll use next time except I would tone down the dijon just a tad so it's not overpowering (maybe it was just the brand I bought. I added fresh pineapple and omitted the sugar, I really liked this substitution.

Made this to accompany BBQ chicken. My husband, who is a VERY picky eater and isn't really a big fan of coleslaw in general, thought it was great! He had two helpings. I didn't have a chile on hand, so I substituted a few chopped strips of roasted red pepper instead and it was great! Even better if it sits overnight or two. I will definitely make this recipe from now on.

I really didn't like the dressing. I prefer a more vinegar tasting dressing than this. The vegetables were quite good and it didn't get watery. I would use the recipe vegetable part again but would change the dressing.
