Perfect!! So delicious. Only piece of advice is that it takes much, much longer than the recipe states to get the level of caramelization needed on the onions. It was easily two hours if not more start to finish on the stove. Absolutely worth the wait though, YUM!

Wow! It's hard to believe that a recipe so simple could be so delicious! I used sweet onions and a sweet red wine. I didn't have fresh thyme so I sprinkled in a little dried. Because I only have an electric stove, my cook times were significantly longer, but OH SO worth it! This is definitely a keeper!

I just made this soup and it tasted just like any good homemade comfort food, was delicious. I used half white onions and half yellow, and also made my beef broth quite strong for more flavor.

This soup was amazing! I have tried many versions of this recipe- but none of them compare. This is better than what you get in a fine dining restaurant. My husband was not a French onion soup fan until now - he requests it all the time and this has become popular with my clients.
Patience is key the carmelization of the onions- but well worth it. I used a Merlot for the wine and my home made rustic bread and the gruyere for the topping.
EXCELLENT! THIS TOTALLY ROCKS!

My first time making it was a disaster. The recipe didn't specify what variety of wine, or onions. All I had were sweet onions, big mistake, and a Spanish variety wine that together made the soup too sweet tasting. Yellow onions are what you need, and a nice French wine.

Made it for Valentine's Day, and my fiance and I couldn't get enough of this! I cut the ingredients in half to serve two and followed it to the letter, apart from using a little less of butter. Yes, the onions took far long to caramelize but it was sooo worth it! I am sticking to this recipe for my future french onion soups!

I love this recipe! It was so easy to make! I did make a few changes.. I used one white, one yellow, and two red onions. I also only used half a stick of butter. I used 1 qt chicken stock, 1qt beef stock and one beef bouillon cube. It did take a lot longer to cook than it should have but it was amazing. I added a hint of the red wine to the chicken/beef stock to give it a richer taste, I used the Barefoot Sweet Red Wine. It complemented the dish wonderfully. I also substituted the cheese for a mozzarella/parmesan mixture. Very good! It's a great starter recipe and easy to make your own!

Excellent and easy but takes a while. Give it time and you will love. I have added some marrow bones to the soup to intensify the flavor.

Excellent recipe, made it in a slow cooker by sauteeing the onions first on high for two hours and then added the rest of the ingredients for 6 hours. Very yummy and flavorful!
