My husband and I adore getting French Onion soup in restaurants. I have made this 3 times in the last 2 months for family and neighbors. I followed the recipe exactly (too paranoid not to, and it is the best we've ever had. The hands-on time is around 20 minutes...the rest is up to the pot and stove.

This is a wonderful dish for a cold evening. Jeanine from Foster City CA asked why the onions didn't carmelize. I don't know if it was omitted or not, but add a little, about 1/2 tsp or maybe a little more, sugar to the onions while cooking, and they will carmelize.

I made this recipe the other night for dinner and it is by far the BEST french onion soup I've ever eaten. My family was amazed at the flavor. This will be a regular in my house.

I love this recipe! Tastes great, my family loves it. However it is very rich and I was unable to find the cheese he used.
Recipe is easy but takes time.
The first time I made it I was freaking out because it looked terrible untill I added the broth. I was like, "What am I doing wrong!" Just follow the recipe and everything will be fine.

This soup is great. I was a little confused b/c it took longer than 5 mins for wine to evaporate. My kids loved this too! Thanks Tyler!

Although tasty, I could not get the onions to carmelize. I used red onions and a combination of olive oil/butter. I see that one person wrote in to say only butter should be used as per Tyler's recipe...Any other suggestions?

This soup is excellent!! I followed the actual soup recipe exactly as it is but did something different with the cheese/bread part. It was very easy to make and I will definitely be making it again!!

I was unsure of when it was time to evaporate the wine with the onions, if it was going to burn. It did take more than 5 mins to evaportate, but it was worth it. Also 55 mins for the cooking process. I have been doing a Julia Child's version for years. It was a 3 hour from start to finish. I was amazed of how tasty and fast this recipe took. I will never doubt Mr. Florence again. Yummy!!
