FABULOUS RECIPE! The problem is keeping the family away from nibbling while I finish dinner. I actually think they could make a meal on this one side dish.

I have a largely southern family and we have always cooked green beans this way with a ton of variations. In fact sometimes my mother would add new potatoes or we would use ham hocks or shank or just pieces of ham instead of bacon or both. Sometimes if there was bacon grease on the stove or in the fridge we threw a couple spoonfuls of that in (yummy. I also use butter instead of olive oil for this usually for richness and you can also add a bit of balsalmic or red wine vinegar for a little tartness and as others mentioned garlic to taste. To me this is a basic recipe with a lot of possibilities

as the recipe said "adjust seasoning" was a must. I simply added some Season-All and that did the trick. Even without it though it was good but just not quite so flavorful.

instead of using more pepper (which does make it better try thick sliced peppered bacon. it's soooo tasty!!

I'd been trying to make the green beans from my childhood, but could never replicate the taste. This recipe is good is it! Can remember if the recipe called for garlic, but I did add some.

OK, I think Food Network overgeneralized the prep in this, as well as a few ingredients (and lacking certain amounts.

*First, you should cook the bacon with the olive oil...don't add the onions (or garlic from the jar...which I thought was an AWESOME addition. This way the bacon actually cooks and greases instead of just boils with the stock. More flavor that way.
*Second, use LOTS of pepper and use garlic salt instead. Again, more flavor.
*Third, I added some liquid smoke (about four tablespoons and a couple shots of Worcestershire sauce.
*Fourth, I used beef broth instead of chicken broth or stock, and less of it. Like, half a quart.
*Finally, I added some mushrooms in there to help sop up the stock (which makes the mushrooms tastier.

I wanted to make something other than the traditional green bean casserole. I decided on this recipe because with bacon and onions how can you go wrong and it seemed quick and easy to make. It was not as flavorful as I thought it to be. I will not be making this again.

This was very yummy. I can see why it's a great holiday dish! Very high in fat but oh so good! Will definately make again.
