Tyler never ever disappoints me when it comes to Mexican food! I am Mexican American and I have had real down home Mexican food and this tortilla soup was spot on! He knows his Mexican flavors well. The only thing I added was the jalapeno with the seeds because I ( Family like our food spicy !

Tyler does not disappoint with this recipe; it is delicious! I also made his chicken stock and it was easy and flavorful. I followed his recipe almost to the 't', I added one more jalapeno for added kick. The tortilla strips are addictive. Make this recipe, if you love Mexican dishes, you'll love it!

I took note of comments from others on this website and added 1 tsp of ground cumin, some cheyenne pepper and chili powder, plus a few dashes of tabascco towards the end of cooking. I did this because I like things a bit mpre spicy. The end result was that it was simply delicious! The tortilla strips were perfect. Frankly, the best tortilla soup my husband and I have ever eaten. Add extra ingredients or not. I think the soup will still be great. Thanks to Tyler for his genius! Try this, it's a MUST.

Wonderful soup! I made this for a party and had rave reviews. Definitely depends on homemade stock and frying your own tortilla strips. Like other reviewers, I added corn and black beans to make the soup more robust - added some extra stock to deal with this increase. Also added a good deal of chili powder and cumin to increase the Mexican flavor.

this recipe had way too many onions in it in our opinion. plus it was lacking in flavor. we were looking for some more spice!!! next time i will season the chicken more. I will be looking for a different recipe.

I really liked this recipe as a starting point. I've made it as posted with homemade stock, with boxed stock and with additions. As posted it's good but yeah, mild even with jalepeno in it. I always do my own thing with seasonings as I think most people do. I used Goya Sazon in this, a dried herb salt free blend as well.
I've also made this with added veggies and stuff--corn, white beans, black beans, shredded napa cabbage, chayote squash, cooked wild rice, fideos (small thin noodlesand chopped green chiles. I don't care for cumin and there are two types of mexican cooking--with and without cumin so it all works.

I love this recipe! I've made it many times with my own stock as well as carton and it always turns out good. Last time I sauteed some zucchini with the onion and it came out great. I've also used a little sour cream when I don't have avocados. I can't say how much I love this recipe. Usually I just add rotisserie chicken and it's a super quick weekday meal. A must though is frying your own tortillas, I couldn't imagine it with store bought ones. :

Great recipe. Not sure how he did it on the show, but I added a spice rub (paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, and tabasco to the chicken as a marinade before I cooked it. Also, if you allow the soup to cook down (2 + hours the flavors really concentrate and, in my humble opinion, it is that much better. I also added the chicken while I let the soup cook down.

I tried out this recipe last night but added from knowledge some spices because it seemed it would be too bland, especially since i didn:t use homeade chicken stock... I added about a teaspoon of mexican ground oregano, cumin and then chili powder to taste. The flavor was sooo delicious, I also added homeade slow cooked black beans and we added diced gouda cheese to the soup - i will definitely be making it this way with the added spices again!
