After reading some of the reviews I was concerned that the dish wouldn't have enough flavor. So, I tinkered with the recipe from the beginning and got pretty good results. The family loved it and everyone went back for more!
I added some bouillon, plus a little garlic powder and ground cumin to the water for braising to give the beef itself a little extra flavor. Then, added a small, chopped jalapeno and a little garlic powder and cumin to the tomato/pepper mixture (along with plenty of salt and pepper. I also used just a little bit of the liquid from the canned tomatoes so there was no problem with everything getting dried out. Last, I added some cilantro just before I put the beef into the tomato/pepper mixture, rather than using it simply for garnish. End result: plenty of flavor - great!

In its essence a good recipe, turned out really beautifully. But it's labor intensive and the flavor was really flat. Needs a punch of spice and salt.

Mr. Tyler Florence , you should take your recipe out. Your recipe is too dry , the meat is too dry. I tried the One from Mr. Johnny Simancas and that is Great is excellent , juice and a lot of taste, it does not have carrots and celery. Yours is too dry, not sauce, and not taste . I am Very sorry Mr Florence but that is my finding . I am a professional Cook I give Johnny A+.

It is really challenging to find good, authentic Venezuelan recipes, and I was excited to try this one for my Venezuelan son-in-law. It was a real hit! Because my daughter's family rarely eats beef, I tried using pork shoulder and it worked beautifully!

Because of time constraints, i used a crockpot to cook meat while I was at work. All ingredients were slow cooked. I prepared rice in drained off meat broth. Sofrito was done at the last minute and added to the shredded beef...
I would make this recipe again, it would be wonderful in Tacos, Burritos, or even eggs.

This is a very mild dish, but full of flavor. If you like spicy, you could definately add to your liking. I couldn't find the cheese where I live, but I put a small amt. of sour cream for richness, and it was delicious. The pepper relish tasted great on scrabbled eggs next morning, as well.
