I made this for Thanksgiving for my vegetarian 14 yr old son. Others tried it and loved it too. I did not use the bacon and substituted a 15 oz can of pumpkin for fresh. It made a lot so after Thanksgiving I threw in the left over cranberry sauce and served it over pasta. My husband & I adddd chunks of turkey to the dish.

This was absolutely wonderful. I used a pound of bacon, and I used the bits left over in the dressing, and I am making it again this year. I can't wait! If you want something different for Thanksgiving this year, THIS is the change to make!

Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews that said it should only be 1 1/2 pieces of bacon. I used a whole pound. The gravy didn't come out very greasy but the salt overpowered everything. You couldn't taste the pumpkin and sage at all - just salt. So we ended up not using the gravy. Good thing I had jar of gravy as a back up. Whoever posts the recipes on FoodTv.com should double check the measurements before putting it online.

Thanks to the reviewer who suggested 1 1/2 pieces of bacon instead of 1 1/2 pounds. After I put the bacon in the pan, it didn't seem right, so I read the review. I removed most of the bacon and the grease and continued on. Aside from the fresh pumpkin being a total pain to peel and cut up, the gravy tastes great. I'm glad I decided to prep it the night before. Now I just hope the measurements for the spice rub on the turkey are correct...seems like too much onion powder and garlic powder.

I am planning to make this gravy for Thanksgiving . . . but was going to reduce quantity to only make a small amount. When I reviewed the quantities, I discovered that this calls for 1 1/2 POUNDS of bacon . . . and an additional 2 Tbsp of butter~!! I even reviewed the TV special to be sure that wasn't a typo because I can't imagine how greasy that would make 1 quart of gravy!! And the one review here said it was WAY too much bacon and too salty. So, in my fairly extensive cooking experience, I would bet that Tyler meant to say 1 1/2 SLICES of bacon. Will let you know how mine turns out. Happy cooking!

I give this a poor because made as the recipie states it's awful and sure to give you a stroke from all the sodium! With modification it is very good.

Way too much bacon is used and ruins it.

I remade using half the bacon and it was still too salty for my taste. Will try one third next time.

Also after simmering for 12 minutes it tasted like crap. I let it simmer an hour then threw in a potato to cut back on the salty taste even more and simmered 20 more minutes and it was very good.

Next time I will use 1/3 of the bacon called for and I think it wioll be awesome!
