I'm surprised by these reviews. My husband and I actually enjoyed the rice. I've made it several times and think it compliments to beans nicely.

1 tablespoon of tumeric in the rice is insane. Someone at Food Network needs to take this down or correct the recipe. Tyler is a great chef and should be embarassed to have his name on this.

Black beans were good and spicy. The rice was awful!! Never seen Tyler screw it up before, but something just had to be missing.

The black beans taste authentic. I used the canned and didn't have to soak them.

The yellow color was beautiful, as for taste...lets just say my garbage can was happy. This was the worst rice Iv'e ever had and yes I followed the recipe exactly and yes I am a pretty good cook, if I don't say so myself. The bay leaf did nothing for the taste but give it a very potent smell. Speaking of smell, the spices in the bean recipe made my house smell as if I was making something amazingly delicious, not so for the taste of the beans, don't get me wrong the beans were not thrown out but if I go the rest of my life not ever making them again, I'd be OK with it. I love Tyler, he's my favorite, but the rice wa a mellow yellow.

i only made the bean portion of these recipes, but they came out amazingly. they were perfectly spiced and tasted delicious. i used them as a topping on nachos for my superbowl party (everyone wanted extra helpings!, then served the leftovers with some chicken chili, that my husband ended up mixing together and eating like a burrito bowl. my husband has been asking for these beans every day since i made them! plus they're healthy! i wouldn't change a thing!

The spicy black beans were great, well as good as black beans are going to be. (They are best when mixed with Mexican rice. I made the rice for my family, and we all took the first bite and a pained look swept over all of our faces. I didn't think that truly messing up yellow/Mexican rice was possible, but make this yellow rice recipe and you'll find out that it's very possible.

Beans took forever to cook and were extremely bland.

The beans were too hot for my husband and I really didn't like the taste of the rice. It was bland.
