OK, I agree with the reviewers who say the recipe turned out too heavy. Also, the beans just would not get done. I followed the instructions explicitly. The beans were tough and the consistency was very dense. I ended up having to move the beans into my pressure cooker, thus adding more liquid too. On the plus side, the beans did have a good flavor, maybe a little too much molasses for my taste. So with a little tweaking of the recipe, adding more liquid and moving the beans into the pressure cooker to finish cooking, they turned out OK. I most likely would not make this recipe again.

The reason the beans did not get soft was probably an editing error. 2 directions are reversed. after cover beans with fresh water and place over medium heat it should say simmer stirring occasionally , for about 25 mins etc. then add the remaining ingredients.Beans will never cook tender if you add salt or acid before they are soft. I also added a carrot, celery, 1/2 onion and bay leaf while they were cooking and removed before adding other ingredients. I also cooked bacon in microwave and added it to beans chopped. eliminating the baking period. Guess they would be called BBQ beans then. With these minor changes it is a great recipe!

I should have read the reviews before offering to make this recipe for a neighborhood get-together. My beans were still hard like rocks after following the recipe, baking them WAY LONGER than called for!! I ended up nuking them and they still were tough. I will NEVER used dried beans again for anyone's baked bean dish. I don't know if the beans were just old, whether or not one of the other ingredients toughened them up to the point where they were beyond saving. Nonetheless, I was over here and everyone else was over there eating pulled pork etc. I see Tyler's Ultimate BB recipe calls for canned cannelini beans yet this recipe was from his Food 911 show, too time consuming and poor end result for me, lesson learned. Sorry Tyler!

This was my first try at baked beans.
Tyler Florences recipe for the Best baked beans was the easiest and the best beans I have ever had. Hats off to trying something new that tastes great.

This baked bean recipe is just too heavy, too rich, too salty. My family didn't like it at all.

First, I will say these are the best baked beans. My family requests them all the time!! I have to make a double batch. Second, they do take longer to cook than is called for (6 hrs, but they are worth it.

In reference to the previous reviewer whose beans were under done - I know if you cook beans with tomatoes or wine they will not cook all the way. Maybe the ketchup is the culprit?

Beans didn't get soft as I would have liked and I cooked them for a long long time, I might use canned beans next time it would shorten the cooking time. But very good tasting

well, i too had some trouble getting the beans to cook all the way through, and the suggestion to use canned navys sounds like a good one to me! but in spite of the slightly firm beans, the flavor was amazing (and i skipped the salt pork. a pinch of cayenne added to the broth made em even better.
