My husband and I didn't think it was that great of a recipe. There was too much going on and it took away from the great tasting steak. We'd suggest doing just the steak with the cheese sauce and leave it at that. That was delicious. The cole slaw and the mayo was just too much.

Very disappointed with the outcome. The arugula mayo overpowered the delicious cut and flavor of meat called for in the recipe. The bechamel was very good (I would recommend bumping up the horseradish a bit and was also overpowered by the arugula mayo. Also noticed that the recipe instructions did not align with how Tyler prepared the dish on his TV show. Would not prepare this recipe again.
Fennel slaw was pretty blah; I have found better slaw recipes on the Food Network recipe site.

To start, I am a very good cook. I also have never written a review, but thought I would help out any potential ultimate steak sandwich attempters. I thought I had gotten to the point where I could look at the recipe and determine if it was going to be tasty, but I was way off the mark on this one. There were several things about this recipe that I found to be dissapointing: 1. Pounding the meat was tedious (for the dish, and in the end tasted only of pepper and olive oil (both of which I used sparingly in seasoning, 2. the bechamel was terrible because it had a lot of volume and very little flavor, 3. the gruyere was a poor choice because of the strength of the cheese, the stinkiness of the cheese was the only thing you could taste in the sauce, 4. not enough horseradish for a steak sandwich, 5. the slaw was overwhelmed by the licorice flavor from the fennel and tarragon. That being said, I love red meat, gruyere, and fennel and tarragon, but they don't work together very well in this dish. I did think that the arugula mayo was very tasty and think that it would be very nice on a number of different sandwiches. The lemon in the mayo gave it just the right zing.

Although the recipe took longer than 25 minutes it was definetly worth the effort. Great tasting sandwich, the arugula brings out the flavor and we also loved the fennel slaw.
