Of all the Thanksgivng recipes, Tyler's episode with this one is the best. Traditional favorites with a little flair. Way to go Tyler!

this recipe sounds wonderful and am anxious to try it out, however, out here in the wild wild west, yams are orange colores with red skins and sweet potatoes are yellowish in color with yellow flesh and to me, somewhat sweeter. which do we use in this recipe. thanksgiving is coming right on up out heels and sure would like to know which way to go.

Made this last Thanksgiving and everybody was pleasantly surprised with the change. It was a great change from the old "scary" sweet potatoes with the marshmallow topping(yuck!! that my husband's aunts has made MANY times in the past. From that day she has been demoted to only make a vegetable side dish. That will be another scary story to write.
The ONLY thing I would change in this recipe would be the bananas. I would use two since they were bit overpowering in the taste, but other than that this is a good recipe.

I was SO excited about this dish after seeing it on tv. My mom is a huge yams fan and I wanted to surprise her for Thanksgiving.

I'm a relatively new cook and thought that the proportions of ingredients and times were completely off just by looking at them. They just don't make sense. 30-45 minutes to roast the sweet potatoes was not nearly enough. I left them in for 50 minutes and they were still firm in the middle. Having never done this before I thought that the website was correct and took them out after 50 minutes. The result was VERY discouraging....a lumpy and chunky mess. I decided to continue with the recipe (after all, it was just practice and moved on to the topping. 1 stick of butter was way too much for the brown sugar and flour ratio. It was a gooey blob and not at all the crumbly mixture it was supposed to be. My temper got the best of me and I threw everything into the trash. I also considered writing Tyler and asking for $20 back to reimburse me for the ingredients.

I found another recipe that is very similar to this one but looks much more promising (and less banana-y.

I made this as a side dish for our first Thanksgiving in our new home in TX (we moved from MA to TX. My husband and his aunt both are not big sweet potato fans and they loved it! We all loved it. We'll be making it again this year and every year. :
