This was good, but a little too much of a banana taste. I'd try it next with one banana. Otherwise I followed the recipe exactly. I'm not sure why the New England reviewer substituted maple syrup for the honey, and said it's common here, because it's not. I'm also from New England, and we NEVER do that. It would completely alter the taste of the dish.

I have made this three times in two months. Thanksgiving and holiday parties. You have to consider the SIZE of the bananas and sweet potatoes if you have had problems with taste balance and cooking times. I use three small bananas or two large ones. I generally use small sweet potatoes which cook easily within an hour. Being a New Englander, I naturally swapped maple syrup for honey. It is common practice among cooks here.

One of the reasons I really like this recipe is that it is easily made and assembled during the season when you have a thousand things to do and not a lot of time.

The last time I made it, I folded in three whipped egg whites to see if it would puff up like a souffle. It didn't really pop all that much but it made the dish much lighter and fluffier, an interesting variation. I'm not sure which version I prefer.

I alert people that it's "almost a dessert" when serving it so that they're not surprised or put off by the intense sweetness or the banana flavor.

Sorry Tyler this was not a winner at our Thanksgiving table. The taste of banana reminded me of baby food.

This is a very simple recipe which I just made this past Thanksgiving. I agree with the other reviews that you should limit the amount of banana -- one was fine. You can simply taste it at that point to decide if you need more.

Also, I pre-made the potato/banana mixture two days before and kept it in the fridge; I did the same thing with topping, keeping it separate from the potato/banana mixture. I baked the main mixturefor about 25 minutes to warm it through, then added the topping and a couple of mini-marshmallows as well, and then cooked until melted. Worked just fine, and saved time the day of the holiday.

Very good. You could probably use mini-tart shells as well and make this into a dessert if you've got sweet potato fans.

I used two bananas, and that was PLENTY. I also added cinnamon, and accidentally threw in an extra stick of butter, which was bad but GOOD! The consensus is that this dish needs to be made one or two days in advance so the sweet potatoes and bananas can meld. You can add the topping and bake the day of. The topping was not very attractive, but I thought it was tasty and added the sweetness the rest of the dish was lacking. I made it in a 13x9 and we've been having it for breakfast and dessert all week-not tired of it yet!

I've been a big fan of Tyler for years now based on his tradition of fresh ingredients and most of all fresh herbs and yet I have also come to realize that one must navigate through some of his recipes with a fair amount of instinct-- his ingredient amounts are not always on the mark as many of the below reviews canb attest to. First off, the comments on the amount of roasted banana are right on the money-- I used two, not four and the flavor was at least as prevalent as the sweet potato, probaby because roasting intensifies the banana flavor as the sugars carmelize. Rather than use a whole stick of butter I went with half and substituted some lowfat milk to lower the calorie content without sacrificing richness. I also added a hint of cinammon and a tbls of real maple syrup to add back some richness. For the streusal, I did use a whole stick of butter which in retrospect was a mistake! A half stick would have done the job just as well and despite having broiled the top to a crunchy brown, there were still small pieces of butter that had not quite melted. Mu guests raved about this dish and it really is a winner with the tweaks!

I downloaded this recipe after viewing the video and saw how easy it was to prep. It took me less than 20 minutes to prep after the potato were cooked. All my guest absolutely loved this dish and I had to make copies of the recipe to share with them. My family loves bananas so it was a great hit at our house. The taste of the banana and nuts was a great combination with the sweetness of the potatos. Once again. Thanks Flroence.

Really a fan of Tyler's but even with reducing the number of bananas (used 3 small ones the banana flavor took over the taste of dish. I even used more sweet potatoes than suggested and made sure it was well blended.
My husband just suggested I go back to the "good, ole standard recipe " we used for years" Usually a big fan of the Ulimate Series - not this one.
