I made this cake last night and just served it for Thanksgiving Dinner, it came out way too densed. This is the second coconut cake that I make that comes out dense. Does anyone have a coconut cake recipe that is not dense, or did someone make this and have different results? ( I used the correct version of this recipe, not the original one that was posted

I too, was looking for this recipe after seeing it on T.V. I noticed right away that it was not the same one that I seen, especially the frosting. I read all the reviews and I was hoping that the foodnetwork would get it right. Well here it is, as I remembered it on T.V. The frosting is even different now.
Thank you foodnetwork!

This is not the recipe that we saw Tyler make on the special. I want the recipe he made along with the frosting. It looked so fantastic, and he made it look very easy.

This cake takes a long time to prepare, but well worth the wait! My family loves it, and has become a Holiday request! Thanks Tyler! P.S. I don't think I will do the 4 layers, stick to 2 - had troubles with it being uneven...

What a fluke. The recipe did not match. Can't anyone get it right? You need to revise that recipe.

I, too was fooled by the Food Network Thanksgiving Dessert Special program on Saturday. I made the cake as it was described in the show. It was tough and bland. I have reworked the recipe (in parentheses. It boils down to the same cake I have made for years. It is way better and a dependable recipe.
Here goes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coconut Layer Cake (Ammended from Food Network Dessert Show
1 stick Butter (2 sticks unsalted Butter
2 cups Sugar
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp each vanilla and coconut extract
3 cups sifted cake flour
(1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Tblsp.baking powder
(2 teaspoons baking powder
Bake at 325 degrees 40-50 minutes
Buttercreme Frosting
1 lb butter (2 sticks Butter
1 lb Powdered sugar (2 lb. powdered sugar
(3 Tblsp. more or less whole milk
vanilla extract
Paint Layers with a Simple Syrup flavored with rum (or Vanilla
(I baked this in 3 greased and floured 8" round cake pans.
After frosting, press shredded sweetened coconut flakes into sides and top of cake.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to echo other comments made here and say that food network employs professional cooks/chefs whose ONLY JOB is to get this stuff right. Many new and experienced cooks rely upon your advice. If all food network is going to present is "entertainment", I don't really know how I can believe anything shown on this network. Your integrity is at stake.

I hope that this will help those of you that need the recipe from the
Thanksgiving show. I found the recipe for the buttercream frosting off of Racheal Rays site.Coconut Cake on Dear Thanksgiving Food Network
Cake:
1 Stick Butter
2 Cups sugar
4 eggs
1 cup whole milk
? to 1 tsp of pure vanilla and coconut extract
3 cups flour (sifted w/ the baking powder
1 tbsp baking powder
Add the flour /baking powder mixture to the wet ingredients
Bake on 325 for 40 to 45 min
Frosting:
4 sticks of butter ( Room Temp
3 lbs of confectioner sugar (3 boxes
Pinch of salt
? or 1 tsp of vanilla and coconut extract
(can add ? cup of whole milk room temp if needed
Rum syrup for cake:
? cup light rum
1 cup water
1cup sugar
? to 1 tsp of coconut extract
Simmer in a sauce pan and set aside to let it cool completely
Once cake is done and cooled split each layer in in half so that you will have a total of four layers
Cut the top off of one of the cake so that only one layer has its top. This will be your top layer. Take your first layer and brush it with the rum syrup and then apply your frosting then stack on your second layer and repeat the steps until all your layers have frosting. The layer that has it top should be the top layer on your cake. Make sure you also frost the sides of your cake. Apply the shredded coconut to your entire cake.

My husband as a surprise went out and bought all ingridents to this cake, because I mentioned I would love to make this for Thanksgiving. Well, after him purhasing all the items needed and him reviewing the directions for the cake he remembered that it was a Butter Cream frosting. We are very disappointed in the deception of this show and what was posted.
I would really love to have the actual recipe as it sounded so yummy!

I agree... this is definitely not the recipe that Tyler used for the Dear Food Network special. As one person mentioned, that sounded like a "Basic 1-2-3-4 Cake," which can be found under a Paula's Home Cooking show from Tues., March 07 at 1:00 p.m. (I don't know if they would still have it from that long ago. It was actually on the same printout for Jamie's Coconut Cake, which is listed under the Similar Recipes on the sidebar here. Paula used a 7-Minute Frosting as well for that recipe, but I just substitute my own buttercream instead..

This is not the coconut cake recipe that was on the show today. If it's a big secret, why bother having it on the show. If you expect us to watch and lparticipte in the food Network, you should allow us to view the recipes that are used in the shows.
