I made this meal for 90 people at a church dinner. Never have I received so many compliments on my cooking. The key is to make sure and use raw sausage as anything cooked will not work. This will be a favorite for a long time.

I didn't follow the recipe precisely, as usual I put my own twist on things. First I boiled a whole chicken, used half of the bird for the meatball mixture and substituted shredded mozzarella cheese instead of the parmesan. I also added about 3/4 of a small red apple into the food processor with the rest of the ingredients for the added flavor, it was very subtle. I then baked the meatballs instead of frying them and let them cool for a while before adding them into the soup to reheat, they held their shape great.
This was the best chicken noodle soup I have ever been inspired to make, thanks Tyler!!

I can't understand why so many people seemed to have trouble with this one. I personally watch these shows more for inspiration rather than a step by step guide. Using cooked meat to make meatballs just isn't done and the show clearly showed fresh meat used. I couldn't find any Chicken Apple Sausage at my local store so I used a combination of fresh ground chicken, fresh mild Italian sausage and added freshly grated apple and finely chopped onion. I used the fancier version of breadcrumbs (Panko and they turned out to be excellent. Next time I will add more apple to the meatballs although the subtle flavor really shined only using one. I found that giving the tortellini time to absorb the broth made them melt in your mouth. I served it with Garlic and Mozzarella cheese bread. I added grated mozzarella, parsley and Parmesan to garnish. This by far was an excellent soup and proved worthy of being called Ultimate.

OKAY WHEN I SAW TYLER MAKING THIS RECIPE,IT LOOKED SO GOOD,I WAS DYING TO MAKE IT,SO I CAME ONTO THE SITE TO LOOK UP THE RECIPE,THEN I STARTED TO READ SOME OF THE REVIEWS BEFORE I MADE IT,THEY WERE ALMOST ALL THE SAME,PEOPLE WERE SAYING THE RECIPE JUST DID'NT FIT WHAT HE DID ON THE SHOW,SO I KINDA WENT ANOTHER WAY WHEN I MADE MY VERSION TODAY,INSTEAD OF USING THE CHEESE TORTELLINI I FOUND CHICKEN TORTELLINI,THEY WERE AND EXCELLENT CHOICE,AND I ALSO ADDED IN SOME CUT UP CHIX BREAST,I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO TRIED OUT THE RECIPE FIRST,TO WARN EVERYONE ABOUT IT BEFORE THEY MADE IT.

The soup turned out amazingly well. In fact, my husband said it was the best chicken soup he has ever tasted! My 11 month old loved it too! I'm not sure what the problem was but the meatballs fell apart in my skillet, so I ended up just browning the meat instead. I think the chicken apple sausage is what really made this meal. I also had to substitute egg noodles and skip the cheese because of a dairy allergy but this recipe is so flavorful without, I don't think we missed a thing. I will definitely be making this over and over again!!

As many reviewers here have said, for some reason, this recipe did not transfer well from Tyler's Ultimate episode well. If you saw the show, it'll help, if not, follow some of the reviews!
I did not buy the pre-made sausage, but followed the rest of the recipe with these changes: used ground turkey in lieu of chicken (no apple and added about 1/2 cup bread crumbs. Pan-frying the meatballs gave them some added flavor and color - they finished cooking in the soup, which made them better (absored some of the liquid.
Next time, I will cut down on the amount of stock - maybe 2 quarts instead of 3.
I used one 19 oz. package of frozen tortellini and it was plenty.
With those changes, the soup was very good and very easy!

I'm so glad I read the reviews!! I watched Tyler make this soup on his show and couldn't wait to try it. The big problem with this recipe is that it's totally different from the way he made it on the show and the way it's written on the foodtv website. On the show he bakes the meatballs in the oven, in the website you fry them. Also there is a difference in the amount of chicken broth you use as well as the amount of tortellini. Forget about the chicken meatballs!! I got the wrong kind of sausage at first ( I got precooked they went into the freezer. So it was back to the store to get fresh chicken sausage. I couldn't find chicken apple and got chicken Italian instead. I did what someone suggested and threw a piece of apple in with the sausage and it worked out great. Used only 1 pound of tortellini and 2 quarts of broth. The soup was great and I would make it again! A big thanks to everyone who reviewed this recipe. It was so totally helpful. The recipe should be fixed on the site as it does it an injustice.

After reading the other reviews, I realized that tweaking would make this soup much better. I don't care for apple flavored sausage, so I used uncooked ground chicken instead. I also used whole wheat tortelini, which didn't get as soggy as regular. I slighly thickened the soup at the end of cooking. The soup was great - my husband loved the flavor!

This recipe was awful. I even used the breadcrumbs and still the meatballs woudn't bind. I ended up baking them after frying and they tasted like a fried breadcrumb. The soup was good, but where do i put my leftover garlic? It along with the fried breadcrumbed meatballs went down the garbage disposal.
