As another reviewer stated, saw this episode and couldn't wait to try it. I decided to make it in the morning so not to have a huge mess to clean up right before dinner (you do use a lot of cooking items. Took longer to reduce liquid when carmelizing onions (I would say from start to finish regarding the onions it was about 45 minutes. Because others said it was a bit too sweet I only added about 1 Tablespoon of honey, instead of 2. I don't think it was sweet at all. I think it was delicious. I took out the dish out of the refrigerator when I was pre-heating the oven and ended up cooking about 45 minutes. Will certainly make again and do it in the morning to save clean up time. Thanks for the great recipe and winning!

Two of my most favorite dishes in one! This was absolutely fabulous!!!! It was a bit rich but tasted so good. Who needs to go out for dinner anymore??? My only advice if you're going to make it is to start with the onion soup mix first since it takes a bit for the mix to reduce... My kudos to the creator!!!! Absolutley genious!!!!

Saw the show and couldn't wait to try it. The end result is definitely worth the little bit of effort! I have tried for years to make a homemade mac & cheese that my daughter would eat. This is a winner. Everyone in my family absolutely loved it. It has a fantastic flavor.

After seeing the show, my husband couldn't wait to try this version of mac & cheese. We made it last night and thought it was very good. It is time consuming but we made it together, I cooked the onions as he prepared the rest. We didn't make any changes to the recipe. I thought the sweetness of the onions offset the cheese just enough. He took the rest to work and shared it with co-workers who also loved it.
We will definately be making this again.

When I saw this had to try right away as mac n chees and fr. onion soup our 2 of my favorite foods. I thought that it was way to sweet and the sweetness overtook the mac n cheese. Maybe cut back on the honey. As previous reviewers stated it took over an hr. to prepare, mostly to carmalize the onions. Good idea but I think I'll enjoy my mac n cheese and fr. onion soup seperatly.

I tried this last night, it was very time consuming as the previous review said. I honestly can't say I would make it again, it was good but not worth the work in my opinion. The onion soup idea might work, but to me mac and cheese is mac and cheese...this is not! I give him credit for an original recipe and rated this a four for that reason. The topping, however, is fantastic and I will use it on my old favorite recipe.

I saw this being prepared and could hardly wait to try it - the gruyere added a wonderful nutty taste and the carmelized onions were divine - not your Mom's mac and cheese - a real step up!

This is a great, different Mac 'N Cheese receipe. It was a bit time consuming. I will try a packaged onion soup mix next time to cut down on the prep time and ingredient list. The taste is wonderful--two of our favorite meals all put together in one bowl. I might add some chicken next time as well. FYI don't add very much salt, if any--the cheese and bread crumbs add enough to the dish by themselves.
