Wow! I have honestly never had shepherd's pie before, and since I have a vegetarian in the house I had to find something to please everyone. This is amazing and I will absolutely use this again!

Couldn't find mushroom broth at four different specialty stores, so I made my own by simmering boiling a cup of water with 1/2 pound white mushrooms, 2 carrots, a leek, dried shiitakes, crushed garlic, and fresh majorum, sage, thyme, bay leaves, peppercorns, and parsley, then adding 8 more cups of water and simmering for an hour. Made 4 cups of incredibly rich, flavorful broth.
Also, I boiled the potatoes in vegetable stock instead of water, and added the woody stalks of the thyme and sage (that I pre-chopped for the VSP recipe to impart more flavor. They turned out beautifully.
An easy recipe to customize and make your own - make potatoes cheesy, throw some fried onions on top, or whatever you like.

VERY time consuming but soooooo worth it. I added some chopped kale when the mushrooms went in, as well as a couple shakes of worcestershire sauce. I also mixed in some white cheddar cheese and an egg to the mash potatoes. The egg keeps the potatoes firm and the cheese browns up nicely under the broiler. Just make sure you set the broil setting on low!!

I made this last night and it got mixed reviews. Some liked it, some thought it was ok, but I didn't care for it. While the recipe isn't difficult to make, it is very time consuming. Not only that, it is quite expensive to make. I couldn't find mushroom broth, so I substituted vegetable broth instead. I also substituted green beans for celery since I don't like it and left out the celeric since I couldn't find that either. I think what I liked the least about this recipe was the gravy. I found the flavor to be very strange. The mashed potatoes were fantastic, but I used my own personal recipe to make those. I won't make this recipe again.

This was terrific. My familiy has been complaining about my new vegetarian cooking "phase" but they had not complaints about this recipe. And that's sayng something considering they are carnivores to the core.

This was SUCH a good recipe; I'm an 18 year old boy and even I was able to cook this with relitave ease -- and delicious results! The red wine, sage and tyme really accentuate the nuttiness of the porcini mushrooms. It takes a while to cook (the prep time alone was well over 45 minutes for me but this recipe yeilds a mouth-watering dish that's suitable for everything from decadent parties to simple nights in; from vegetarians to the pickiest carnivores.

    You gotta try this!!

I absolutely loved it - lots of steps to making it but pretty simple altogether. I made mine vegan by replacing the dairy ingredients with non-dairy alternatives, and I couldn't find celeriac so I used regular celery instead. I couldn't believe how delicious this shepherd's pie turned out! It is definitely on my list of go-to meals from now on!

I love shepherd's pie, but I also love lamb. It's my go-to dish when I have leftover lamb lying around from a previous meal. This recipe would probably be great without the meat, but I did add about a pound of grilled lamb from the night before. The celery root was a revelation. I've never had it before and it adds a nice earthy touch to this dish. Other than the addition of the meat, I followed the recipe as written and it was fantastic. 2 1/2 helpings in one sitting.

This took a while to prepare, the chopping and prep work for the veggies took a while, but it was worth it. It makes a good size portion that fed two of us for three meals. I would recommend this for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Good stuff!

I heated the oven to broil and set the rack to the upper third of the oven. I'm sure this recipe would have turned out good had I not set the oven to broil. Did anyone else have a problem with the potatoes burning? I did not leave it in the entire 15/20 minutes and the top was burnt.
