Even without the almond topping this recipe is great. If you would like to substitute unsweetened organic cranberries, it will do just fine. I also altered the recipe slightly to include 2 cups white sugar and 1 cup brown sugar instead of all white sugar - it gives it a more old-time flavor. I also added a bit of ginger, but that is to your taste. Happy baking! -CAC

Before making this and after reading the reviews, I reduced the sugar amount by 1/2. The result was absolutely delicious. My preference for deserts is not too sweet. Give it a try. I strongly recommend it.

This took me longer than any dessert that I've tried so far, but it was worth it! I served it with Carmel Cinnamon Spice Cake ice Cream and it was raved by my guests as something from a 5 star restuarant! Well worth the effort.

I hate to be the damper on all these great reviews, but this recipe was not as big a hit at my house. We had a couple of people who adored it and scarfed it right down. Then we had a couple of people who took one bite and spit it back out. "Too sweet" and "weird aftertaste" (I don't know, the nutmeg, or the lemon zest, maybe? were the comments. So, unfortunately, I won't be making this again. With regards to the procedure, I found this not difficult at all. The time-consuming part is dicing and peeling the apples, but there's no way around that. I used a food processor for the dough, which worked just fine and was very quick. My cobbler baked in about 40 minutes, just as the recipe said. Overall, this is one I think you have to try for yourself to see if you like the flavor or not.

This is so much better than any pie or any other cobbler recipe I have tried in the past 30 years of cooking. It keeps well in the refrigerator after the initial serving. The multiple textures and flavors of the apples are delightful. A little of this can go a long way, make plenty as people will desire seconds!

What a wonderful cobbler. The best I have ever made and eaten. Also, all of those who joined me thought so too.
Thank You!
