A Ginormous Challenge

Inspired by the big-time eats seen on Ginormous Food, finalists put their over-the-top spins on comfort foods like cheeseburgers, pancakes, and spaghetti and meatballs. While they were given some oversize ingredients like bread, they had to make do with the standard cooking tools in the kitchen. So Jason here looked to a paella pan to sear his French toast.

Strong Showing

Matthew is quick to pick the grilled cheese for himself, and when it comes to cooking, he's able to put his signature Southwest spin on the gooey classic. The mentors are mostly pleased with the results, but it's presentation that really stands out. "You were engaging. You were having fun," Bobby tells him.

Rookie Mistake

"You hit me right between the eyes with this," Bobby says to Jason, noting the finalist's top-notch bourbon-spiked stuffed French toast. His presentation, though, leaves much to be desired. In a pretty serious mishap — we are eight weeks into the competition, after all — Jason fails to tell the full story of his dish.

Advantage: Amy

Amy is confident in her Dutch baby pancake offering — it's finished with frosting and colorful sprinkles — and it turns out she has every right to be. The mentors are pleased too, as guest judge Brandi Milloy says, "I would definitely make this at home." Amy's presentation is strong too, so much so that she earns the win in this Mentor Challenge and a few minutes of sought-after mentoring time with Bobby and Giada.

Double Trouble

Following a rocky presentation in the Mentor Challenge, Cory needs to deliver a strong Star Challenge performance wherein he'd balance a live-stream demo of a quick-fix dinner for a would be home cook. He hardly succeeds though. "This is just painful," Giada notes as she watches him mostly keep to himself and hardly speak in the kitchen. Alex Guarnaschelli, who's acting as the home cook and making finalists' dishes in real time, is only able to get him engaged by asking him playful questions.

Hits and Misses

It takes Rusty a bit to find his footing in the live demo, but once he does — after a bit of prodding from Alex's questions — he gets on track with his recipe. But it turns out to be too much, as he's executing a complicated recipe that Alex says is "a lot for a home cook to keep up with."

The Biggest No-No

Amy commits the mother of all culinary sins in her demo; she touches raw chicken and fails to wash her hands ... and then goes on to prepare an uncooked salad with her hands. Ultimately the mentors can't taste her dish because of this, and she's crushed. "My heart is just dropping," Amy admits. This had the potential to be a successful challenge for Amy, as she delivered a live demo that lead Alex to tell her, "You're fun." But in the end, she lands among the bottom with Cory and faces potential elimination.

Shock, Awe and Alex

Jason can hardly contain his excitement at meeting Alex when he walks into the kitchen following his live demo. "I thought you did a really good job," Alex tells him of his presentation, and Bobby and Giada agree. His pork dish is strong too, so much so that he places among the top-performing finalists this week.

Cory's Journey Ends

After an impressive eight-week run in the competition, Cory says goodbye this week after not one but two lackluster presentations that hid his personality. "I came here and I was myself, and that was my goal. I cooked the best food of this presentation, bar none. And when I leave here, I will continue to do the same," he says stoically after being sent home.
