The Next Grilling Generation

These eight talented barbecuing kids are bringing their best to the competition. Not only do they all crave the title of champion, but they all want the $20,000 prize. However, only one kid can win it all. Meet these next-generation grill masters and get to know more about their cooking styles and what makes them tick under the pressure of competition.

Carter

Carter (12) has always had an interest in food, splitting his focus between grilling and baking. But the thrill of the grill gives him more room for creativity than the precision needed in pastry. Still, he enjoys bringing sweet flavors to his barbecue recipes, and he loves a grilled peach for dessert. When it comes to barbecue, Carter wants to redefine it as modern and refined with his unique plating.

Jacob

Always the polite Southern boy, Jacob (12) claims he has BBQ sauce running through his veins — it could be because he's the fourth generation of barbecue competitors in his family. He won his first competition at age 6, so he's primed and ready. Although he's very competitive, you won't see Jacob stressed: He's cool and collected under pressure, with killer instincts and a backbone of experience.

Josie

She may not be from Louisiana, but Josie (11) knows her way around Cajun cuisine. She's gained quite a bit of barbecue knowledge from her uncle, who's a regular competitor. Seeing him in action has driven her to be the perfectionist she is, leading to her first competition win in the Kids category just last year. Watch out for Josie, because she's always ready to show you a thing or two.

L.J.

Half mad scientist and half Renaissance man would be the best way to describe L.J. (12), who also goes by the nickname of Fluffy because of his characteristic curly locks. L.J. loves to be at the center of attention and very much enjoys cooking for the ladies. He describes his food as Sweetie Pie Cuisine, since he likes to combine sweet and savory flavors. If he's surprised your palate, then he's done his job.

Paris

Paris (11) is all about juicy, dirty dishes that can be eaten with your hands, not the kind of proper food that requires a fork. She's familiar with the competitive barbecuing circuit, as she and her mom have competed on teams. But Paris hopes to one day surpass her mom in cooking ability. Watch out for this bold and spicy girl, because she's not afraid to take on anything that comes her way.

Sydney

Sydney (10) first got into barbecuing after seeing her father compete. She soon followed suit and has since entered more than 20 competitions, often placing second but still waiting for first place. She doesn't believe in complicated recipes, preferring classic and simple Southern dishes done right. Her goal is to present her cooking style to a wider audience, and she's geared up for a major win.

Ty

Although he's from a small town, Ty (13) has big ambitions. He started cooking with his dad on the barbecue circuit, and has since won eight out of the nine competitions he's entered on his own, mostly competing against adults. Ty can't get enough of using peppers in his Tex-Mex cuisine. When it comes to competing, he's very focused and precise but can easily improvise when the occasion calls for it.

Tyler

With a penchant for public speaking, Tyler can talk his way into and out of almost anything. At home he's the resident chef to his parents and two older brothers, usually grilling seafood and fruit he gets fresh from the garden. He's completely self-taught in the kitchen, and he's not afraid to cook over an open flame, specializing in all-American meals but sometimes going a little spicy to shake things up.
