Flower Faux Pas

"I'm going to be spring up all in their business," says Sandy, making citrus flower cookies for the desserts-on-a-stick Pre Heat challenge. "These cookies just don't look done," she says, adding candy melts to the centers at the last minute, but it doesn't escape the judges' notice: "It looks a bit rushed," Lorraine says.

Apart from the Pack

"I feel like all my competitors are going to try and go the cake-pop route," Dwayne tells Bobby, so he's making cream puffs on a stick. Inspired by honeycomb, he's presenting them as "beehives hanging from the tree," dipping each pastry in caramel and topping it with a spun-sugar nest.

One-Upping the Other

"He's making the same thing!" Damiano cries, upset to see that Dwayne is also making cream puffs. "I do this every day. You have no chance," he adds. "It's like he's all up inside my head," says Dwayne as both bakers start spinning sugar to decorate their treats, although Damiano's much showier with it.

It's What's on the Inside That Counts

"I'm ready for my beating," says Andy, embarrassed that he couldn't complete his flower cake pops. "Don't apologize," Nancy tells him. The other judges join her in coming up with different descriptions for the pops: bunnies, butterflies, dragonflies. "It's not terribly refined," says Duff. "But I'm not either," he adds with a laugh.

Cold, Crunchy Advantage

"Finally, I win an advantage," says Damiano, after earning the exclusive use of an ice cream machine in the Main Heat challenge, which has the bakers making birthday cakes paired with ice cream. He's making a vanilla-chocolate crunch gelato, hoping it can put him "a step above everyone else," he says.

Stiff Peaks of Imperfection

"To finish up the meringue I'm going to spike it out, and then torch it," says Sandy, completing her caramel and banana cake. The judges have mixed reviews for the cake, but are even more divided about the topping. "I love this meringue," says Nancy. "I don't," Duff retorts. "It's a little chunky," he says, pointing out that it's overwhipped.

Cake Culture Clash

"Hold on," says Duff, not letting Simone serve her handbag cake before he can point out the flaws with the fondant. As she proceeds to remove the exterior, the judges are bewildered. "Fine! You don't like my fondant. I'll take it off, then," Lorraine jokes. Simone's excuse: "In America we're not used to fondant."

Bad News and Good News

"When's the last time you iced a cake?" Duff asks Dwayne, hinting at his lemon chiffon cake's lacking looks. Beyond that, Nancy finds the flavor too subtle. On a positive note, Duff calls Dwayne's cream cheese ice cream "off the hook," saying it "tastes like you stuffed a cheesecake in the ice cream machine."

An Unbeatable Combination

"It's me on a plate" is how Damiano describes his pan di Spagna. "Dang," says Duff after digging in, and Lorraine seconds his opinion with a "double dang." Duff calls it a clever combination of textures: a soft cake with a crunchy gelato. Bobby announces that Damiano has won for his "exquisitely balanced" duo.

The Competition Gets Even Stiffer

"Each of your birthday plates had flaws that the judges couldn't ignore," says Bobby as he calls up the bottom three: Sandy, Dwayne and Simone. After telling Simone she's safe, he reveals Sandy is going home. "I competed with some of the best bakers in the country," she says, thanking everyone for an "amazing adventure."
