Steak for One

In the season premiere, Chef Tim Love wowed the judges — but not in a good way — when he prepared himself a lunch of grilled steak and white wine during the Chairman's Challenge and later served the panel a largely no-cook salad.

Back for More

It was a nail-biter finish as Chef Spike Mendelsohn faced potential round-one elimination for the second year in a row, but was ultimately pardoned on account of his winning use of pineapple in a sweet-and-sour fish dish.

Harsh Criticism

This is the plate of banh mi-inspired pasta that proved to be Chef Falkner's downfall in the Chairman's test of Innovation. Judge Simon Majumdar called it "a bit of a mess" with "fusion confusion," but Chef Elizabeth held her dish, saying, "That's totally rude. I certainly put a lot of attention to detail on that pasta plate."

Battle Turns Physical

In a Next Iron Chef first, Chefs Elizabeth Falkner, Duskie Estes and Amanda Freitag put their rivalries to the side and indulged in a friendly food fight after competing in a three-way Secret Ingredient Showdown.

Big Smile

At the Farmers Market in Los Angeles, each of the rivals was photographed by Todd Selby in their individual food elements, and they used those images to represent one another on a plate.

Laughing It Up

It's not all work and no play on the set of The Next Iron Chef, as rival chefs and picture partners Nate Appleman and Eric Greenspan goofed around with finished dishes during a low-key moment behind the scenes.

Nose Dive

Before tasting Chef Vigneron's truffled egg — his culinary depiction of Chef Guarnaschelli — Iron Chef Zakarian got up close and personal with the delicate bite before digging in.

Spatula Sidekick

Chef Vigneron posed with his cartooned spatula amid the chaos of a doozy of a Secret Ingredient Showdown: Battle Breakfast Cereal.

Man of Mystery

Without hesitation, Chef Mehta forwent known ingredients and instead selected a mystery can to work with during the Chairman's Challenge of Transformation. He treaded lightly when opening this unidentified item, only to find that it was packed with chicken.

Opening Woes

For Chef Freitag, the most-difficult part of this challenge may have been simply opening her finicky can of corned beef. Despite struggling with the attached key for what seemed like an impossibly long time, she resorted to a can opener and finally unlocked the meat inside.

A United Front

For the first time in Next Iron Chef history, two chefs, best friends Spike Mendelsohn and Marcel Vigneron, formed an alliance while battling in the Secret Ingredient Showdown: They plated their offerings together and presented to the judges as a combined unit, not individual rivals, much to the shock and disappointment of fellow finalists and judges.

Back From Behind

After a poorly received Showdown stunt with now-eliminated Chef Spike, Chef Marcel proved that he has the culinary chops to stay in the competition with a winning dish made from calf tongues and cheeks.

Falkner Falls

Just like Chef Anne Burrell in last year's Super Chefs, Chef Falkner was eliminated after enjoying an advantage in the ingredient auction and going head-to-head in the Showdown with the rival she had chosen, Chef Appleman.

Culinary Odd Couples

In the Chairman's test of fusion, the rivals were challenged to marry seemingly disparate ingredients, including bone marrow and fruit candy, peppermints and chicken livers, blue cheese and peanut butter, clams and strawberries, and squid and marshmallows.

Teppanyaki Cook-Off

Cooking at Shibuya restaurant in Las Vegas, Chefs Appleman and Mehta were forced to prepare their offerings on teppanyaki grills, metal flattops, with just a limited pantry of ingredients during Battle Shrimp.

Culinary Illusion

Master of Illusion David Copperfield shocked rival chefs, Alton Brown and at-home viewers alike when he made a deck of cards move with sleight of hand and suspended one card in particular, that which revealed the challenge ingredient of bacon, from Alton's coat pocket.

Chef Freitag's Pick

Putting her advantage to work, Chef Freitag chose fellow rival Chef Appleman to be her partner in the Chairman's Challenge of Transcendence, much to the disappointment of Chefs Vigneron and Guarnaschelli.

Teammates No More

Partners in the challenge of transcendence, Chefs Vigneron and Guarnaschelli were forced to abandon their partnership after falling to Chefs Appleman and Freitag and learning that they'd face off against each other for survival in the Secret Ingredient Showdown.

Down With Clams

An unfortunate decision to include clams in addition to haddock in his chowder ultimately did in Chef Appleman, as judge Simon found the shellfish to be "a little bit chewy."

Plethora of Ingredients

In this finale battle, Chefs Freitag and Guarnaschelli were forced to cook with not just one Secret Ingredient but six. The Chairman presented them with several ingredients inspired by each of his long-standing Iron Chefs, Masaharu Morimoto, Bobby Flay and Michael Symon, and asked that their three-course offerings utilize two ingredients from the arsenal representing each Iron Chef.

The Next Iron Chef

In the Season 5 finale, Chef Alex Guarnaschelli bested rival Chef Amanda Freitag to become The Next Iron Chef and take her place in the pantheon of culinary greatness among Iron Chef greats Masaharu Morimoto, Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, Jose Garces, Marc Forgione and Geoffrey Zakarian.
