Tacos & Tequila: “The People's Food”

Chefs and diners alike had their late-night nosh dreams come true at the New York City Wine & Food Festival’s Tacos & Tequila event, hosted by tatted taco-guru and epic party-thrower Aarón Sánchez. Fourteen all-star chefs, including Amanda Freitag and Laurent Tourondel, showcased all the creative culinary goodness they could fit inside a tortilla at the party, held at the Eventi hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
Aarón (pictured above with Miles Landrem, the executive chef of his restaurant Johnny Sánchez, and three partygoers) called the ever-popular combo of tacos and tequila “the people's food.”

Chef Landrem had one of the standout dishes of the night, perfectly crispy Lamb Barbacoa Flautas, served with a tangy epazote labneh.

Chef Adam Schop of Miss Lily’s put a New York City spin (by way of Jamaica) on his dish, a Jerk Pastrami Taco served with charred cabbage and Scotch bonnet mustard (above, bottom right). A sweet and spicy Oxtail Taco with jerk-spiced yogurt and a citrus pico de gallo, served on roti (bottom left), was another top dish.

Touondel’s Steak Taco — stuffed with black-garlic charred skirt steak, avocado and pickled jalapeno chimichurri — and deconstructed elote-style corn with chipotle were both crowd favorites.
Late in the night, Aarón paused the DJ and the crowd on the dance floor to thank everyone for coming out to the event and supporting the festival, which to date has raised more than $10 million to help fight hunger through the No Kid Hungry campaign and Food Bank For New York City.
