Top Farmers' Markets Across the Country

By: Victoria Phillips

Although sweet summer is coming to a close, regional farmers’ markets are still going strong. Not all markets are created equal, however. Earlier this summer, American Farmland Trust asked local markets to sign up to participate in a contest that would ultimately be named " America's Favorite Farmers' Market." Once that was completed, the organization polled readers across America: "Where is your favorite farmers' market?" More than 94,000 votes were counted in four categories: boutique, small, medium and large markets.

American Farmland Trust holds this annual contest to raise national awareness about the importance of buying fresh food from local farms. “Farmers' markets offer a great way for consumers to support local farms and farmers,” said American Farmland Trust President Jon Scholl. “In addition to providing access to fresh, seasonal foods, farmers' markets help strengthen our ties to the land where our food is grown and the people who grow it.”

North Port Farmers & Craft Market in North Port, Fla.

Voted best boutique market with 15 or fewer vendors, this market features fresh produce, as well as jewelry, crafts and artisan breads.

City of Rockford Farmers Market in Rockford, Mich.

Winner of the small market (16 to 30 vendors) category, Rockford Farmers Market has a vast array of entertainment, including cooking demonstrations and nature activities.

Historic Lewes Farmers Market in Lewes, Del.

With 1,837 votes, Historic Lewes Farmers Market took top honors in the medium market category. Hosting 31 to 55 vendors, the market hopes to “Save the land, provide small farmers and small producers a way to stay in business, and to educate our children about the food that we eat,” according to its website.

Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market in Las Cruces, N.M.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market is the number one large vendor in the country with 50 or more booths. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the outdoor market’s fresh breads, produce, herbs and baked goods.
