Healthier Hospital Food, Cookies by the Book and Bottle Delivery by Drone

Healthier Hospital Food

Healthy Foods to Help You Heal: Just the thought of hospital food can make a person feel a little sick, but there's a movement underway to change that. Hospitals are increasingly rethinking their menus, abandoning those salty (but otherwise tasteless) broths, quivering cubes of gelatin and beige foods, and instead they're embracing healthier fare like fresh fruits and vegetables and sustainable, locally grown foods. "Good food can help speed the healing process, and hospitals can be really good models," Lucia Sayre, co-executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area Physicians for Social Responsibility, tells U.S. News. What's more, adds dietitian Susan Levin, who works with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, providing healthy foods on those trays is "probably the best opportunity in educating the patient in how not to return." Eat Your Words: Summer reading season is just around the corner. And if you're looking for a literary snack to sustain yourself as you stretch out with a good novel by the pool or on the beach, you might consider whipping up a batch of book-worthy cookies. The website Book Riot has assembled a collection of literary cookie cutters — in the shapes of open and closed books, favorite literary characters, and beloved writers — that will make you want to reach for your cookie recipes and set to baking. Because the only thing more delicious than devouring a good book is doing it with a plate of fresh-baked cookies at arm's reach. [ Book Riot]

Making a Play for Soccer Fans: McDonald's has unveiled a special line of World Cup Sandwiches, in honor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which will be available at more than 800 McDonald's locales throughout Brazil until June 25. Each of the seven sandwiches in the collection, created to celebrate "the culinary traditions" of customers' "favorite teams," will be available on a specific day of the week. So while Sunday is McBrazil (Angus beef, mayonnaise, special Brazilian vinaigrette, lettuce and Emmental cheese) day, on Thursday it's all about the McItaly (polpettone meat with tomato sauce, grated Parmesan cheese and pepperoni), and Saturday belongs to the McUSA (Angus beef with barbecue sauce, crispy onions, pickles, lettuce, bacon and cheddar cheese). In Other Food News: A Las Vegas club, The Marquee Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan casino, is offering bottle service by drone — with a minimum order of $20,000. I'm not sure I'd want to stand directly under it on one of its test runs, though. [ VegasSeven, KLAS-TV] Giada De Laurentiis' first restaurant has now officially opened its doors in Las Vegas. She told The Today Show she'd worked to "create a homey environment" at the restaurant, named Giada, so diners "felt like they were coming over to my house for dinner." [ Today.com]
