Serena Williams Fills Her Hopman Cup — with Espresso

That coffee craving can find you anywhere — even on the tennis court.
Those of us who are hopelessly addicted to drinking coffee have all probably found ourselves, at one time or another, in the middle of our workday, thinking, "Without a cup of coffee right now, I simply cannot go on."
But while most of us can probably walk to the office kitchen or pop out to the coffee shop around the corner to satisfy our urgent java jones, Williams had to get an official to sign off when, midmatch against Italy’s Flavia Pannetta at the Hopman Cup in Australia, she made a desperate plea for a double shot of caffeine.
“Is it illegal to order an espresso?” Williams asked, seemingly amused by her own request, but unable to stop herself from making nonetheless. “I mean, I don’t know if it’s allowed. Is it allowed? I’m tired.”
After the drink, which the tennis star ordered “as black as it gets,” was apparently approved, carefully delivered and eagerly downed, it seemed to give the pro the jolt she needed. Williams went on to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, prompting a slew of quips about bagels and coffee.
"I am a coffee drinker and I didn't have mine this morning and I was just feeling it," Williams later explained, saying she’d been jetlagged and “had to get some coffee in me.”
Williams also told the press she doesn’t plan to make a cup of joe a regular on-court thing, joking that a coffee sponsorship could be in her future. Or at least, one assumes she’s joking.
