Terrarium Cakes May Be the Most-Succulent Dessert Trend Yet

We all like succulent desserts. But a new cake-decorating trend is taking that concept super-literally. Terrarium cakes, topped with succulent plants and flowers, are a thing on Instagram — eye candy in the extreme.

Boasting meticulously rendered buttercream-frosting cacti, “hens and chicks,” aloe and other drought-resistant mainstays, these cupcakes and cakes are sucking in the accolades. Mashable calls desert-plant-inspired baked goods “the best way to eat your greens.” Sustainability site TreeHugger proclaims them to be “jaw-droppingly realistic-looking.”

Pop-culture-obsessed Konbini says they blend “a little botany, a little cuisine, and a lot of sweet tooth.” And Brides is flagging them as a new wedding trend “to add some flair to your big day” — particularly well suited to spring and autumn nuptial celebrations — that “could, quite possibly, inspire your whole wedding aesthetic.”

Browsing through Instagram posts with the hashtag #terrariumcake brings desert desserts that are almost too gorgeous to be believed, let alone eaten, with their spiky peaks and sumptuously swooping dry-climate-adapted flora. Their sugary patches of edible “sand” add to the overall sweetness.

The botanical beauties from Jakarta-based baker Iven Oven have been a particularly big hit. Those colors — so pretty, like some kind of pastry mirage. But is anyone else feeling a bit … thirsty?
