Pancakes & Syrup Peeps Now Exist

They sound kind of good actually.

Peeps — those seasonal sugar-covered, chick-shaped marshmallow treats you’ve either been eating or avoiding since you were a kid — are pretty much the opposite of trendy. They seem to have always been a part of springtime, an Easter basket staple. But that hasn’t stopped Just Born, the maker of Peeps, from getting in on the maple-flavor trend.

Among eight new Peeps flavors Just Born is offering this year: Pancakes & Syrup.

“Whether you enjoy them for breakfast or as a special treat any time of the day, PEEPS Pancakes & Syrup flavored marshmallow chicks are a delicious, one-of-a-kind taste sensation that you won't want to miss,” the Peeps website promises.

Peeps for breakfast? Huh … maybe.

In any event, Just Born, which is also launching Peeps flavors including Sour Cherry, Neapolitan, Orange Sherbet and Lemon Sherbet this year, is definitely mindful of the maple mania sweeping the food landscape.

“A trend that is on the rise is maple, and taking fun flavors like this and extending it beyond the traditional breakfast or baking category and into the candy aisle is fun for us and our fans,” Peeps Brand Manager Caitlin Servian told the website Moneyish.

Pancakes & Syrup Peeps, which come in a 10-pack for $1.25, are available only at Kroger supermarkets.

One Instagrammer had this to say about the flavor: “While they smell vaguely like #pancakes and #syrup... they mostly tastes like #peeps with a hint of maple.”

Another called them “a decent fake maple.”

That actually doesn’t sound too bad. Certainly better than Sour Cherry.
