Magnolia Bakery Celebrates Sex and the City 20th Anniversary in the Best Way Possible

The iconic cupcakery is giving away free (pretty, pink) Carrie cupcakes.

Difficult though it may be to believe, it has been two whole decades since Sex and the City arrived on our TV screens to ignite our admiration for cosmopolitans and unaffordable high-heeled shoes – not to mention four fascinating female characters. But believe it or not, the iconic HBO show, which aired its first episode on June 6, 1998, marks its 20th anniversary this week.

It wasn’t until Season 3 (episode 5, "No Ifs, Ands, Or Butts") that Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) scarfed down pale-pink-frosted cupcakes while chatting about "very cute" fellows on a bench outside Magnolia Bakery, a real spot in New York’s Greenwich Village, in an iconic scene that turned a low-key neighborhood spot into a major tourist destination essentially overnight and launched a worldwide cupcake craze. The scene itself was less than two minutes long. But neither of those mitigating factors are stopping the bakery — which has branched out from its original location and now has multiple locales around the world — from celebrating the show’s anniversary the best way possible: with free cupcakes.

On Wednesday, June 6, between 12 noon and 1 p.m., each of the nine U.S. Magnolia Bakery locations will give away Carrie cupcakes — vanilla with pale pink buttercream frosting, topped with a dainty daisy and named for the "Sex and the City" character who inspired them — to lucky customers with purchase, while supplies last, People reports.

And if you can’t get to one of the bakery’s locales or just don’t feel like standing in line, you can also compete for free cupcakes via social media. Just follow @magnoliabakery on Instagram and then share a photo of yourself re-creating the famous "Sex and the City" cupcakes-on-the-bench scene and you could be one of three winners selected on Friday, June 8. Each winner will receive a dozen cupcakes. Perfect for sharing with your three best friends.
