In case you missed it, social media can’t get enough of dalgona coffee. This creamy drink from South Korea made a huge splash on TikTok, but Instagram and Twitter users have also been jumping in on the trend and posting pictures of their fluffy, whipped beverages.

People are even taking their dalgona coffees to the next level by swapping the instant coffee for hot chocolate mix, cocoa powder or matcha. Overall, it’s pretty hard to escape the creamy coffee trend — it’s seemingly everywhere.

However, the reviews on the trend are somewhat mixed. While some people rave about this sweet, pillowy drink, others say it isn’t worth the hype. Why? Because it takes forever to whisk the instant coffee, sugar and hot water into the glorious golden-brown foam that makes the drink so luscious.

Folks who have attempted to make the foam claim that no matter how hard or how long they whisk, the instant coffee, sugar and hot water mixture refuses to froth up. While most TikTok users say that it should take three to five minutes to whip enough air into the mixture, some who have tried it say that it can take up to 30 minutes!

Even Lizzo couldn’t figure it out. In a hilarious TikTok video, the singer whisks until her hand cramps up, yet there’s still no foam in sight. Lizzo eventually grows tired of whisking and instead makes her coffee the old-fashioned way: by pouring pre-made iced coffee from the fridge into her glass of iced milk.

Some TikTokers suggest using an electric hand mixer or milk frother to make this step easier, but if you don’t have one on hand, don’t fret! Luckily, there are ways to make this process a little less strenuous. If you’re struggling to whip up a dalgona coffee, one of these easy hacks can help.

Add Cornstarch

The key to the perfect creamy coffee is probably already sitting in your pantry. While making a vanilla version of this creamy drink, TikToker user @isabel.1002 adds a dash of cornstarch to her Mason jar. The cornstarch acts as a thickening agent and can help the ingredients whip into a frothy texture.

This savvy TikToker even takes the hack a step further by then putting the lid onto the Mason jar and shaking it. By doing this instead of mixing the ingredients with a whisk, she still gets that whipped texture — minus the upper body workout.

Roll the Whisk Between Your Hands

If you’re absolutely set on using your whisk (or if it’s all you have in your kitchen), this hack helps you whip up the foam faster while also dirtying up fewer dishes. TikTok user @melliemelanie first adds her hot water, instant coffee and sugar into a tall drinking glass rather than a bowl. Next, she put her entire whisk into the glass so that the tip of the whisk rests on the bottom of the glass. She positions the palms of her hands on each side of the whisk then quickly rolls it back and forth between her hands. After a few minutes, she’s made a thick, golden foam.

To avoid washing another dish, @melliemelanie finishes her dalgona coffee by pouring her milk and ice cubes straight into the glass containing the foam. Who knew it could be that easy?

Refrigerate the Foam

No matter which method you choose to make your dalgona coffee, it’s important to note that the foam can be kept in the refrigerator . That’s right — whether you make too much froth or you just want to prep for your next inevitable caffeine hankering, you can cut time by saving your foam in the refrigerator. It’ll last a few days, so all you’ll have to do is fill a cup with your choice of milk and ice cubes for a sweet morning treat.
