Martha Stewart Changed the Way I Make My Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are a big hit in my family; we make dozens of them every holiday season for gifts and dessert tables. But year after year, I find myself with the same conundrum — my sugar cookies come out looking okay but the texture is that of a thick rubber band. On top of that, my decorating skills are anything but impressive. I’m lucky if I can color in the lines, let alone outline and properly flood a traditional sugar cookie. The cookie struggle is real, folks.

This year I’m determined to nail holiday cookies. I decided to look to the Food Network Kitchen app to see if I could find the perfect sugar cookie recipe that tastes delicious and has festive flare. As expected, Martha Stewart came to my rescue. Her class on Embellished Wreaths takes the traditional sugar cookie up a notch (or two)! While taking the class, I realized that I had been making a big mistake with my sugar cookies wrong my entire adult life.

It’s such a minor mishap, but it creates a huge impact on your final bake: order matters. Most of the time when I’m baking, I just throw everything into my KitchenAid and start mixing. Turns out, that that’s a big no-no when it comes to baking. In Martha’s class, she notes the importance of the order of which you’re mixing your ingredients, because it can really impact the bake and texture of your cookies (two main issues I’ve been looking to fix)!

According to Martha (and proabably every other professional baker on this planet), you start by mixing the dry ingredients in a bowl that you then set aside for later (key). In your stand mixer bowl, you mix up the wet ingredients starting with butter and sugar. Then add in eggs and other flavorings like vanilla extract and orange, and only then, do you add in your dry ingredients.

And there I was, 21 minutes later with perfectly baked, decorated sugar cookies that looked like the cutest holiday wreathes. This recipe test was so successful I’m going to make these cookies in bulk to give as delicious stocking stuffers for the holidays! Want to give it a try to see for yourself?
