I scream, you scream, Food Network screams for rich, fruity and extra-chocolatey ice cream. You read right: In this episode of Top 5 Restaurants, sweet-tooth scouts discovered America’s best creameries and ice cream parlors. Hosts Sunny Anderson and Geoffrey Zakarian gave you the scoop on these countdown-worthy frozen treats. Keep reading to find out who’s churning out Food Network’s favorite.
The show began at Graeter’s in Cincinnati, where one family has been scooping out their famous Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip — made in an old-fashioned French Pot Freezer — for over a century. San Francisco’s Humphry Slocombe ranked fourth on the list for none other than their Secret Breakfast. Hitting all the right nostalgic notes, this flavor does have a secret: cornflakes, which are baked into a crisp cookie, then chopped and hand-mixed into a rich bourbon base. Up next: The Franklin Fountain in Philadelphia for the Mt. Vesuvius. This 19th-century-inspired parlor sculpts fresh vanilla ice cream into a mountainous base and adds decadent hot fudge, brownies and whipped cream for outrageously delicious toppings. Top 5 Restaurants zipped back to the West Coast for the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper flavor at Salt & Straw. This Portland, Ore., creamery focuses on locally produced, seasonal ingredients like the fresh strawberries that they roast until dark and caramelized and add into their creamy balsamic-infused base. Topping Food Network’s ice cream expectations was Brooklyn’s Ample Hills Creamery and their best-selling flavor, It Came From Gowanus. Owner and former monster-movie screenplay writer Brian Smith gives his chocolate ice cream a thrilling twist: homemade hazelnut crack cookies and orange-scented brownies — the perfect combination of chocolatey crunch that creamed the rest.
