What to Watch: Father’s Day Festivities on The Kitchen and a Culinary Adventure on Food Network Star
This weekend is all about dad, and on Saturday morning, Ree Drummond is making a cowboy feast for her husband, Ladd, and her father-in-law, Chuck. She’s whipping up Breakfast Grits, steak and her mom’s Apple Dumplings. Then the co-hosts on The Kitchen are celebrating dad with a golf course-themed dessert and some basketball cupcakes.
On Sunday morning, Ina Garten is taking the fear out of typically daunting dishes like Souffle a L’orange and Ayesha Curry is using new ingredients to make a date night dinner for her husband, Stephen.
On Sunday evening, teams of dads and their kids are cooking up classic family recipes in Flavortown Market, and on Food Network Star, the finalists will become one with the elements when they’re tasked with making jungle appetizers and a main course in the desert.
Ladd and his father, Chuck, are out feeding cattle on the ranch, sharing stories about the old days and looking forward to a slap-up cowboy spread prepared by Ree. She's mixing up a fabulous PW Steak Rub to sprinkle over juicy Breakfast Steaks, then on the side there's cheesy Breakfast Grits with bacon and spicy jalapenos. There's also a pan of sticky sweetness in the form of Ree's mom's classic Apple Dumplings (pictured).
The Kitchen kicks off Father's Day celebrations with a stack of Marcela Valladolid's Buttermilk, Sausage and Bacon Pancakes and a lesson in building a golf course cake with a store-bought cake. Sunny Anderson's Maui Luau Burger is a surefire hit for cookouts, and Willie Geist, father of two and host of Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, stops by to make a delicious Meaty Grilled Pizza with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms (pictured) with Katie Lee. The hosts share new ideas to replace traditional Father's Day gifts and toast with Dad-inspired cocktails.
Ina is tackling daunting dishes with easy techniques, from a perfectly risen Souffle a L'Orange (pictured) to overcoming pastry fears with her totally professional-looking Anna's Tomato Tart. Super chef Jose Andres has an amazing trick for separating eggs, then there's foolproof caramel for irresistible Salted Caramel Nuts.
Date nights are a great way for Ayesha and her husband, Stephen, to get together with their friends. This date night, they're switching things up by using new and interesting ingredients in recipes like Easy Saffron Creme Brulee and Spiced Tea Mojitos! Ayesha's friend, interior designer Parisa O'Connell, offers to spice up the tablescape while Ayesha finishes off the dinner with Crispy Rice and Spicy Beef and Chicken Kabobs with Cucumber Yogurt (pictured).
It's a Father's Day feast when three dads and their kids pit their family recipes against each other for a shot at $20,000! First, they must make their greatest grilled dinner using the processed ingredients found in the store's middle aisle. Then, dads and kids enjoy a round of bowling that will determine the store ingredients they'll have to score for their game day favorites.
The ten remaining finalists divide into two teams, with each team creating a five-course menu for an experiential restaurant. Diners will experience a completely different environment for each course, such as an appetizer in the jungle and a main course in the desert. Each finalist must also make a video menu describing their dish for the diners, who will select which one they want to taste. Special guest Tyler Florence dines with Giada De Laurentiis and Bobby Flay and helps decide which finalist is sent home.
