Celebrate small pleasures with former Chicago Tribune writer and The Feast Nearby author, Robin Mather. In her book of essays and recipes, Mather recounts her year-long journey in local eating after losing both her job and her marriage in 2009.

Moving to a cottage in her native Michigan, Mather vowed to eat three home-cooked, seasonal, and local meals a day — all on $40 a week.

The book starts with spring, a fitting season for Mather’s new beginning, and features seasonal recipes like asparagus bread pudding and sweet-biscuit strawberry shortcake. As spring gives way to summer, and then fall, Mather teaches you how to make yogurt, can corn and dehydrate carrots. This no-nonsense book provides easy tips for aspiring locavores, and shows how a few small changes in your eating habits can affect a whole community.

You can buy your own copy of The Feast Nearby or enter in the comments for a chance to win your own. Just let us know, in the comments, what you do to eat local.
