Good Capital: America's Healthiest City

Take a tour of Washington, D.C., to find out where the locals go to stay healthy.

Washington, D.C., can add something new to its long list of accomplishments: It's the healthiest city in the country, according to the American Fitness Index. Every year, experts at the American College of Sports Medicine rank cities based on factors like the number of farmers' markets and organized physical activities. Minneapolis held the first-place spot for the past three years, but D.C. just won back the title. Here's where the locals go to stay healthy:

1. Smoothie School Hawthorne Organic Juice Bar, the first organic juicing spot in D.C., hosts health workshops on topics like seasonal eating and edible skin care; most classes are free. 3706 Macomb St., NW;

2. Organic Eats Restaurant Nora was the first restaurant in the country to be certified organic; chef Nora Pouillon even helped create the standards for certification. Regulars are fans of her famous monkfish with green beans and polenta. 2132 Florida Ave., NW;

3. Vegan Tasting Menu Raw vegans can have a big Friday night out at Elizabeth's Gone Raw, a six-course raw vegan meal served at a caterer's century-old townhouse. An extra $50 buys organic wine pairings. 1341 L St., NW;

4. Salad Your Way Sweetgreen, a create-your-own-salad chain started by three Georgetown graduates, now has 27 locations — 11 in D.C. Hit the Pennsylvania Avenue shop for lunch and you'll likely bump into Capitol Hill staffers. 221 Pennsylvania Ave., SE;

5. Farmers' Market D.C. has more than 35 farmers' markets, and the Eastern Market (held Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays) is the oldest. On Saturdays, chef Jonathan Bardzik hosts cooking demos using market ingredients. 225 7th St., SE;

6. Bike Tour A group ride around Capitol Hill is a lot more fun than a spinning session. Cyclists meet every Tuesday at Capitol Hill Bikes for a 10-mile loop around the historic district, passing the White House and Smithsonian along the way. 719 8th St., SE;

7. Yoga Brunch One Sunday a month, yoga enthusiasts gather for Grip the Mat's Bendy Brunch: a workout followed by a veggie-heavy meal. The venue changes, but demand is always high. Sign up for the next class at; reservations open two weeks before every event.

8. Community Garden Volunteers gather at THEARC's nonprofit garden in the spring to harvest produce for the Ward 8 Farmers' Market. The garden, open to the public, is home to an 18-tree fruit orchard, honeybee hives and tons of herbs, plus picnic tables for visitors. 1901 Mississippi Ave., SE;
