Headed Into the Great Outdoors

You can't have a grilling competition without going outdoors. For Kids BBQ Championship, production headed to Saddlerock Ranch and Vineyards in Malibu, Calif. The 1,000-acre property, encircled by the Santa Monica Mountains, served as a picturesque backdrop where the competitors could grill freely without the restraints of a studio.

Ingenious Cooking Stations

Since the set was located in a working vineyard, wine barrels were used to support the cooking stations for the eight kid competitors.

Ready to Grill

It's a grilling and barbecue competition at its heart, so of course each competitor was provided with a gas grill and charcoal grill. Each station also included two sizes of food processor, a blender, knives, and various utensils and equipment.

A Well-Stocked Pantry

The pantry offered just as much of a selection as any show taped inside a studio. From left to right here, there are various types of cooking equipment, dry goods, produce and spices.

Shop to It

A close-up of the pantry shows appliances, pots and pans mixed in with the fresh goods. There are also coolers containing perishables, and shopping baskets to make gathering items that much easier.

Farm-Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Another close-up reveals the wide array of fresh California produce, including berries, tomatoes, potatoes, grapes, chile peppers, broccoli, asparagus, plantains, lettuces and citruses, among others.

Spices Galore

What would these young grillers be without spices to make their signature rubs? Here an old chuck wagon holds a wide variety of spices. And to the right is the infamous clock, which times the challenges.

Things Can Get Hot

Of course, the pantry has been stocked with dried chiles — in artfully labeled containers, no less.

Plating Makes Perfect

Last but not least: plates. Plating is a very important part of the final score, and so the kids were provided with a wide selection in different colors and materials.
