Meet the Sideserfs

When Natalie's cake business took off not long ago, Dave quit his job, and now this husband-and-wife team runs the booming Sideserf Cake Studio in Austin.

Think Beyond Cake

To execute her over-the-top designs, Natalie relies on more than just cake. Here she's working on the base of a structure with cardboard and wires.

Balancing Act

Remember that cardboard structure? Here Natalie is using it to support the layers of cake, which she carved to fit the piece.

Delicate Work

To make sure that even the smallest elements of their cakes are true to form, Nataile and Dave pay careful attention to each detail of the design.

Family Check-In

In the kitchen, Natalie and Dave come together to catch up on the state of their business.

Letting Loose

OK, so it's not all work at Sideserf Cake Studio.

Better Together

Partners in work and marriage, the Sideserfs are sure to keep their relationship at the forefront of what they do.

Mrs. Robinson Makes 3

While Natalie and Dave may be enjoying giving their pup, Mrs. Robinson, a quick scrub, she doesn't seem as thrilled with the process.

Behind the Scenes

To capture each stage of the cake-crafting process, multiple crew members were on hand to film the action.

Vertical Impression

Not your average sheet-pan pieces, Natalie's cakes are flawlessly realistic, and she doesn't hesitate to use creative measures to bring the designs to life.

Facial Fame

Natalie flashes a smile of her own as she works on the mouth of an oversize piece in her studio.

It's Selfie Time

Just like you and me, Dave and Natalie are quick to snap selfies — with the help of a prop or two.

In Progress

We can't wait to see the finished product when Natalie is through crafting this seemingly gravity-defying design.

Talking It Out, Maybe

What went wrong, guys?

Precision Matters

With steady hands and careful focus, Natalie puts the finishing touches on a yet-to-be-revealed cake.
