Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar, for decorating

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Add enough of the buttermilk to moisten the dough and make it soft, not wet.

Roll rounded teaspoons of dough into balls and place on a ungreased cookie sheet. With a brush or fingers, moisten the top of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk and slightly flatten the top of each cookie. Sprinkle with raw sugar or colored sprinkles.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until slightly golden. Let stand for 2 minutes before removing to cool on a rack.

I love these cookies. I don't use buttermilk though. I use evaporated milk. I have made them 3 times already and love them. I... also have made them as cut outs. They are a hit!!!! I am making them again tonight for Valentines heart cookies. Read more

    Good!

This was the second time I tried making these cookies. It came out so much better with butter milk! First time I just used... whole milk and the cookies came out too flat! The taste was just ok because they were a bit floury.. All of them went straight to trash can. Second time I made sure to used butter milk and little less sugar. I also tried not to make the mixture too wet. I added little more than a pinch of salt recommended in some reviews. The cookies came out perfectly round and weren't flat at all! My husband liked them a lot he wanted to take some of them to his work (and it was two dozens already using just the half of the mixture). Next day he said the cookies were gone in 2 minutes.Read more

overly sweet even for a sweet tooth but great cookie

I will definately make these again but will have to try cutting the sugar. They are the bakery style cookie I have been... looking for, just a bit too sweet. I actually used whole milk (we had no buttermilk on hand and didn't feel like making some with vinegar) and the texture was excellent. Very chewy and yummy. I think they would be good with an additional 1/2 tsp. of almond extract too. Read more

    A great cookie.

IGreat cookie, looks and tastes great. Good balance between sugar and flour, and not too buttery. True to its title, nicely... chewy too. I, like many others opted for regular milk (instead of butermilk), but otherwise followed recipe and cookies came out just fine. Exception: I did put dough (rolled into balls on cookie sheet) in fridge for 7 minutes before baking. Read more

Good reciepe, not as sweet as I'd like

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
I didn't have any issues with the butter milk, tho I didn't put it on the top and they came out fine. My only complaint is... that they are more floury than sweet. Good cookie if you only want something a little sweet though.Read more

OMG! The best cookie recipe, with a couple changes.

I used French vanilla refrigerated coffee creamer instead of buttermilk. I also added Cook's brand "Sweet Dough Flavor", and... rolled dough balls in course sugar. I'm addicted.Read more
