Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar, for decorating

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Add enough of the buttermilk to moisten the dough and make it soft, not wet.

Roll rounded teaspoons of dough into balls and place on a ungreased cookie sheet. With a brush or fingers, moisten the top of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk and slightly flatten the top of each cookie. Sprinkle with raw sugar or colored sprinkles.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until slightly golden. Let stand for 2 minutes before removing to cool on a rack.

    question

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Would royal icing work well w/these cookies? i want to make these cookies n decorate them for an after school club and i... thought since royal icing hardens i could just pile them up on top of each other instead of using a regular icing and having to carefully put them into a container to transport. LIKE AN OLD-FASHIONED TEA CAKE

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I've made alot of sugar cookies before but this one is definitely the best. They are so easy to make and they are chewy. I... did a couple of things differently. I didn't have any buttermilk on hand but I did have some dry buttermilk powder from a specialty shop. I added that with 2 TBSP. milk. When it comes to to flatten and brush buttermilk on top of the cookies, I just simply used regular milk. I also baked these in a 325 degree oven for 10 minutes. PERFECT!!!!!!!!Read more

    Delicious

I think this is a great recipe. I sprinkle them with sugar in the raw because I like the texture. They never last long at... my home. We can't stop eating them. I bake them when I have a little extra buttermilk and tuck some away in the freezer. They come out perfectly.Read more
