Ingredients
- 5 apples (recommended: Cortland or McIntosh) 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 cup water
- 8 to 10 strawberries, stemmed and chopped
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar
Directions
Peel and core apples then cut into small chunks. In a large saucepan, bring apples, cinnamon stick, and water to a boil and simmer until apples are tender when poked with a fork, about 15 minutes. Add strawberries and cook 5 minutes more. Remove from heat. Press the mixture through a sieve over a bowl. Taste, and if sugar is needed, add now while the mixture is still warm. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

I used this recipe as a starting point, here's my recipe:
3 lbs of tart summer apples (Green Lodi, cut into eighths
1 lb strawberries
1/2 cup sugar
1 cinnamon stick
Combine in crock pot, cook approximately 4 hours on high. Remove cinnamon stick. I used the Kitchen Aid food mill attachment for my mixer to mash it up and strain out the seeds/stems/peels. A regular food mill would work as well.
Even with the half cup of sugar it is still tart! When cooking in a crock pot do not add any additional water. It came out very liquid, I strained it to thicken it up without overcooking.

The flavor and texture were enjoyed. The second time I made this recipe ... I mixed the end product with a glass jar of retail applesauce. It was a quick solution for unexpected increase in diners. Great addition to my traditional retail product...especially texture and added flavor from strawberries.

My mom always made tons of homemade applesauce with "inperfect" apples from nearby apple orchard. I wished I had known how easy it was when I had an apple tree. You can use any apple - just adjust sugar and spices. I also used blender on chop setting since I like a slightly chunky sauce. Drained off most juice before blending. thanks Sunny for this so so simple recipe!
