Ingredients

  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium jar ketchup, about 2 1/2 cups
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 all-beef hot dogs (recommended: Ball Park)
  • 4 hot dog rolls
  • 1/2 cup grated Cheddar

Directions

Put a skillet over medium heat and drizzle in a 2-count of olive oil. When the oil gets hazy, add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, until it is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with the back of a spoon, and cook until nicely browned, about 10 more minutes. Stir in the ketchup, chili powder, and mustard and simmer for 15 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

While the chili is cooking, get the grill going. Place a large grill pan on 2 burners over medium-high heat or preheat an outdoor gas or charcoal barbecue and get it very hot. Take a few paper towels and fold them several times to make a thick square. Blot a small

amount of oil on the paper towel. Then carefully and quickly wipe the hot grates of the grill to make a nonstick grilling surface.

Bring a pot of water up to a simmer and parboil the dogs for about 5 minutes. Take them out of the water, pat them dry, and grill them just long enough to mark them. (That'll give them a grilled flavor too.) Brush the insides of the rolls with olive oil and lay them face down on the grill; cook until toasty. To serve, put a dog in each roll and top with the chili and some Cheddar.

    Great chili for dogs!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I agtree with other reviews that this is sweet. I used the store brand ketchup. May try another brand next timne, however,... everyone loved it. My husband isn't a chili fan at all and he ate 4 chili dogs!!!!!! I guess that's about the best endorsement I can make. I did add an extra teaspoon of chili powder but didn't change anything else. And, as Tom from TX said, I simmered my Ball Parks with a couple of crushed garlic toes. They were great.Read more

This would have to be too sweet

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
If you're not a big ketchup fan I think this would have to be too sweet. Before I would even attempt this recipe I'd have to... change the ketchup to tomato sauce with a squirt of ketchup.... but for you ketchup lovers this is probably the one.Read more

Pretty good w/ a tweak or two

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
Not bad but pretty darn sweet. Being from Detroit I love my Coney Islands, this is more like sloppy joe sauce. Luckily I... stopped at 2 cups of ketchup & I upped the chili powder to 2 tbsp & had to add another 1/2 lb hamburger to not be overwhelmed by ketchup. I would drop the ketchup down to 1 or 1.5 cups and adjust accordingly since you can't take away.Read more

One of the best things you will eat this year

IF YOU DIDNT LIKE THIS, THEN YOU DIDNT MAKE IT RIGHT I have been making these ever since I saw the "Ultimate Tailgate"... episode and they have never failed to WIN. These are not meant to be made with whatever is lying about, you need to have the right ingredients (good all beef hot dogs and extra sharp cheddar). I always smash a couple garlic cloves into the pot when I boil the dogs which adds a great flavor to the dogs (I always use Nathan's dogs for this, I recently tried some Kobe beef dogs). I open the buns, drizzle with EVOO and hit them with fresh black pepper and a touch of grey salt before toasting them in a hot oven on a sheet pan. After parboiling the dogs in the garlic/water I transfer them to a medium hot cast iron skillet with a thin coating of EVOO and roll them so they lightly brown evenly, this firms up the dogs and adds another layer of flavor on top of the garlic/beef. I assemble these with the chili hot enough to slightly melt the bottom of the extra sharp cheddar, but not melted all the way. I have gotten into the habit of doubling up on the ingredients and servings, because I can't seem to make enough (my sons friends tend to "show up" every time I make them). I don't think I have ever had leftovers, but this is great as a sloppy joe recipe as well. We have run out of dogs and used the remaining chili on bread for sloppy joes.Read more

Minus the hot dog and add green pepper....SLOPPY JOES!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This is a late review but when I first saw Tyler make this I thought "this is the Sloppy Joes" I grew up on! For those of... you who complained about the Ketchup change the ketchup you used. Some brands can be too sweet and others too rich. When I make my mom's sloppy joes I use either Brooks or Hunt's ketchup, never Heinz. I don't know if I would put Tyler's recipe on a hot dog (sorry Tyler but I love everything else of yours that I have made) but just use gr. beef, onions, green peppers, ketchup and mustard and you have some GREAT sloppy joes!
