Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup best quality mayonnaise
  • 3 cloves roasted garlic, pureed
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices thinly sliced smoked ham
  • 8 slices thinly sliced Swiss cheese
  • 2 dill pickles, sliced into 1/4-inch thick slices

Directions

Form the meat into 4 (1/4-inch thick) burgers. Season the meat with salt and pepper on both sides and cook in a saute pan over high heat to medium doneness, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.

Combine the mayonnaise and roasted garlic in a small bowl and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Spread both sides of each bun with mayonnaise and mustard.

Place a slice of cheese on the bottom portion of each bun, place the burger on top of the cheese, then top the burger with a slice of ham then another slice of cheese then the pickle slices. Place the tops of the bun over the pickles and cook on a sandwich press or wrap the burgers in aluminum foil and cook in a hot skillet over high heat with a heavy skillet placed on top of the burger to press the sandwich. Cook until golden brown and cheese has melted.

    These burgers are great! My husband and I saw Bobby Flay make these on Throwdown and had to have them. We tried them the... next week. This burger is worth the extra prep time of roasting the garlic. It's gooey and juicy and positively perfect. One of the few recipes I have never modified!Read more

    Don't leave out the garlic mayonnaise! it just adds that extra "something" that makes this my all-time favorite burger.

    We were watching Throwdown w/ Bobby Flay earlier in the day and watched him make this sandwich. My husband and I said we... needed to have that immediately! We made it for dinner and followed the recipe the way he did it on the show -- on the grill and with a aluminum foil-wrapped brick to press the burgers down, and it worked really well (though it does take some talent to balance the brick on the sandwiches without sliding off!). We also added a little more pureed garlic to the mayo spread for a stronger garlic flavor, and it was great. We will definitely be making this again!Read more

    My husband and his friend first had this burger at Mesa Grill in Las Vegas. They thought two burgers really sounded great so... they ordered the Cuban and another burger and were each to have half of both. When they reached the half-way mark, my husband's friend would not give up the other half of his Cuban burger. We since make them at home and tease the friend about it.
