Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for the counter
  • 2 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 12 ounces sweet butter - cold and diced small
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine everything except the half-and-half until just combined. Do not over mix. (Mixture will not be creamed, just mixed together.)

Quickly pour in 1 1/4 cups of the half-and-half while mixing quickly. If the dough appears at all dry add the remaining 1/4 cups of half & half until just combined. Again, do not over mix.

Turn the dough out onto a very well floured surface. If the dough is very sticky, flour the top of the dough also. Pat the mixture into a layer 3/4 to 1-inch thick. Using a 2-inch diameter round cutter, cut out the scones, dipping the cutter into flour each time between cuts. Place each scone, as cut, onto a parchment paper covered sheet pan leaving 2 to 3 inches between each scone. This should make 12 round scones. (You can also form dough into rectangular shape and cut with a knife into 12 square or triangle scones.)

Bake for about 18 minutes or until golden brown on both the top and bottom of scones.

    Delicious!

I just made these this morning (with the help of my 2 1/2 year old daughter) and they are super yummy! I LOVE scones and... these I will make again. I followed the recipe exactly, as I like to do the first time I make something, except I brushed the tops with egg wash, sprinkled with turbinado sugar, and cut into small, medium, and large heart shaped scones (I don't have a circle cutter and didn't think of using an upside down glass until later). My batch yielded 7 large, 14 medium, and 8 small heart scones. They are soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. They are not as dense as other scones I prefer, but still very delish! I recommend this recipe!Read more

Very good and easy to make!

Just made these, they came out fantastically. I used 8 oz of butter instead of 12 oz to cut out a little fat.

    These were a hit

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made these scones over Thanksgiving weekend, for my family and guests and they were a huge hit! I mixed the dry... ingredients in a zip-loc bag the night before, which made it really easy to set up the next morning. I dumped everything in my stand up mixer and used all the half and half. The dough was sticky but once I rolled it out with some flour, it was fine. I shaped the dough into a square and cut it into 16 small triangles. I also made some quick icing from confectionery sugar, a little hot water and vanilla. They came out really great. I can always count on Gale Gand's recipes--they are amazing!Read more

    did i do something wrong?

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
i tried to make these with the kids for a fun and healthy treat, and i was overwhelmed with how much dry ingredients i had. i... had such a hard time incorporating the butter into the flour and oats. (i am an experienced baker) by the time we were finished, we ended up with flat little disks... i will admit they have a great flavour, they just never had the chance to become the fluffy scones i dreamed of. maybe i'll try again!Read more

    Great texture

This was my first time attempting scones. The directions were clear and easy to follow. I did modify the recipe for my own... taste and added a teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the dry ingredients then garnished with a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar right out of the oven.Read more
