Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips, such as Ghirardelli

Directions

In a medium bowl, using an electric hand mixer, beat the butter until light and smooth. Beat in the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth and creamy.

Place the chocolate chips in a small bowl and place over a small pan of barely simmering water. Heat, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is melted and smooth, about 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Add the melted chocolate to the vanilla frosting and stir until smooth.

This was good but not great. A bit too sweet for me and not enough chocolate. The balance wasn't there. I'll be tweaking it though, maybe adding some instant coffee to give it a little extra depth.

Easy and very tasty! The measurements are perfect for one 9x13 cake.

This frosting was really easy and delicious! For the commentator who said this was barely enough for a 9x13 cake, I followed your advice and doubled the recipe -you were way off, there is more than enough icing as stated. For the commentator who kept adding chocolate chips to the frosting -this is homemade frosting -you can add more or less by maybe a third of a cup without messing with the consistency too much, taste should have been your guiding principle -use dye if you don't like the color, but then you might as well buy store bought.
