Ingredients

  • 1 loaf challah Bread
  • Melted butter, to oil griddle
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 orange, zested and juiced
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
  • Orange Bourbon Butter, recipe follows

Directions

Cut challah bread in 1-inch thick slices. Allow to sit out for awhile to dry out.

Heat griddle to 350 degrees F and lightly brush with a butter soaked piece of paper towel.

Combine eggs, heavy cream, orange zest and juice, cinnamon and ground nutmeg in a shallow wide dish. Dip the slices of bread into the egg mixture allowing it to soak in on both sides. Transfer to each piece to the hot griddle and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Try to flip only once.

Serve with Orange Bourbon Butter.

For the Orange Bourbon Butter:

  • 1 pound unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons orange flavored liqueur (recommended: Cointreau)
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 3 tablespoons orange zest

Cream the butter in a mixer. Add the bourbon and orange zest and mix well. Leave at room temperature and serve with the French toast.

worth a plane trip to Seattle

I made a special trip to Cafe Nola while visiting Seattle when I saw the french toast Giada raved about. It was the best... french toast, if not one of my favorite breakfast ever! I was so happy to see the recipe online. I've made the recipe many times. I like the contrast of the salty bacon with the sweetness of the french toast. Try it! You wont be disappointed. Read more

    Absolutely Amazing!!

I used a teaspoon of orange extract instead of the orange zest and it was the best french toast I've ever had. I used regular... maple syrup and I think it complemented it very well. Also, I wasn't able to find challah bread so I just used thick white bread. It had just a hint of orange and now I don't think I can go back to regular french toast.Read more

I highly recommend this recipe over the other french toast recipes. It is quite easy to make and the toast just melts in your... mouth. The orange zest adds an excellent flavor.Read more

Yummmy, the challah bread really gave the french toast a great taste than what I used to use (slice bread). Topped with... powdered sugar and cinnamon ....hmmm.hmmm. goood!Read more

    Different and delicious

Challah bread and orange zest. A welcome treat. Made my own Challah bread and followed the recipe. Quite frankly, if you... wanted to omit the Orange Bourbon Butter, the French Toast itself stands well on its own with merely good maple syrup. Enjoy everyone!!!Read more
