Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 1/4 pounds tart apples, such as Empire or Granny Smith (3 apples)
  • 3 tablespoons dried cherries
  • 3 tablespoons sugar, plus extra to sprinkle on top
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • 1 package (17.3 ounces, 2 sheets) frozen puff pastry, defrosted
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Combine the orange zest and orange juice in a bowl. Peel, quarter, and core the apples and then cut them in 3/4-inch dice. Immediately toss the apples with the zest and juice to prevent them from turning brown. Add the cherries, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Flour a board and lightly roll each sheet of puff pastry to a 12 by 12-inch square. Cut each sheet into 4 smaller squares and keep chilled until ready to use.

Brush the edges of each square with the egg wash and neatly place about 1/3 cup of the apple mixture on half of the square. Fold the pastry diagonally over the apple mixture and seal by pressing the edges with a fork. Transfer to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, make 2 small slits, and bake for 20 minutes, until browned and puffed. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I served these for a lunch dessert and everybody loved them. They ended up taking all the rest home with them! The dried... cherries gave it a nice twist. These were really easy and quick to make. Read more

    Absolutely Great!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made these today and WOW, sooo good. I added some little caramel balls that I found in the store near the bags of choc.... chips and that juat added more goodness. They would have been great without them too I'm sure. I read a couple of reviews and baked them at 375, next time I will do 400 like Ina said, the pastry would have turned out a little better, but regardless they are fantastic. I wanted to try a little bite of one and ended up eating the whole thing. Thanks again Ina!Read more

Dissapointing. I made this for the first time ever and the filling was medioker(sp) and a little to citricy for my taste,... and the dough obsorbed the moistness from the filling. very good when hot out of the oven but within an hour it had become soggy. =(Read more

    Easy but elegant!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
These were so delicious. I loved the orange flavor and the dried cherries made the turnovers special as well. The only... thing is- the first time I made these, the bottoms became dark and the tops had not cooked thoroughly. I'm not sure if anyone else had this problem but the next time I made them I reduced the temperature to 350 and they cooked perfectly. Thank you as always, Ina, for another great recipe!Read more
