Ingredients

  • 1 box sugar cookie mix
  • 1/2 stick butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup softened cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, plus additional for surface
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

In a bowl, combine sugar cookie mix, melted butter, egg, cream cheese, and flour; mix together to form dough. Separate dough into 2 equal portions and place in 2 different bowls. Add red food coloring gradually to 1 bowl of dough, kneading together until desired shade of red is created. To second bowl of uncolored dough, add peppermint extract and knead together. On a floured work surface, shape each dough into balls and then roll each ball into 1/4-inch-wide ropes, each about 6 inches long. For each cookie, carefully twist some of the red and white ropes of dough together and shape into a candy cane. Spread candy canes out on cookie sheets and bake on the top shelf of the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool before serving.

Very Inaccurate TV Demo + Awful taste

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
I recorded this episode on my DVR and watched it 3 times, to be sure I understood step by step directions (I was more... concerned with aesthetics than anything). Then I printed the recipe and went to make the cookies. What a waste of time and money! I did not alter this recipe, I followed it to a T and I ended up with a mess that went in the trash. First: The red dough was very, very sticky and impossible to work with, even after refrigeration, oiling my hands, and finally using flour to keep it from sticking. The food coloring altered the texture and consistency of the dough! Slimy and sticky. The white dough was fine to work with, but because I couldn't roll and twist them together I just mixed a little of both and made "swirl" canes... Second: After baking, the candy canes were puffy and wide. Nothing pretty like on TV. Third: They tasted horrible! Not even okay, horrible! You might as well drink the bottle of Peppermint extract! These cookies took WAY TOO LONG to even attempt to get one candy cane out of the entire mix! It was a mess and so not worth the time, money, and effort. It all went in the trash; what a waste! This recipe makes a great dough for cookie cutter sugar cookies. I used vanilla extract instead of peppermint and they... turned out wonderful! Great stand-by recipe!Read more

    Good recipe

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I'm 19, and I hardly ever cook, but I found that these cookies were easy to make and they looked and tasted great. After... reading the reviews I cut the peppermint extract to 1/2 tsp. and used red food coloring GEL. My dough was easy to work with. I would suggest refrigerating the dough before forming the candycanes though, because my first batch were kind of flat when they came out of the oven, but after refrigerating the dough, the candycanes kept their round shape much better. Cute cookies!Read more

    We love these!

My kids are making these again tomorrow - they are a yearly addition to our cookie tray. The non-semi-homemade version of... these cookies says to not make all the ropes then make the cookies, do them one at a time and the dough won't dry out and crack. I like this easy version they have a nice flavor. We used crushed candy canes since we didn't have peppermint extract.Read more

not as easy as it looked on tv

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
my cookie batter was too dry and while trying to roll them out it would crack and brake. It was a lot harder and took a lot... longer than it did for sandra lee!But everybody loved the way they tasted despite the bad appearance!Read more

    Candy Cane Cookies.

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This recipe is very fun and is a favorite with all of my friends when I make them, but they are a hassle to prepare. They... dough cracks and it is impossible to make them correctly. I had to alter the cook time and had to work quickly in order to get them all together without the dough drying on me. In the end it is a very cute cookie, but I do not recommend it if you lack patience.Read more
