Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening, cold, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups buttermilk, plus additional for brushing

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your hands or a stand mixer fixed with a dough hook until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center and add 1 cup buttermilk. Using your hands, quickly fold the dry ingredients into the buttermilk until a sticky dough forms. You may need to add more buttermilk.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently fold the dough over itself 3 or 4 times to create layers. Press the dough out to 1 1/2-inches thick and cut with a floured 3-inch biscuit cutter. Lay the biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet and brush the tops with buttermilk. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until risen and golden brown.

    The Best Buttermilk Biscuits!!!

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
While in the process of mixing the ingredients and adding the buttermilk, I noticed that the batter was a bit dry and not as... moist as needed. The recipe calls for only one cup of buttermilk, I actually had to add almost 2 cups to get the dough as moist as it needed to be. Delicious!!! Read more

    Way to much salt!

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
I am a huge fan of Tyler Florence, he is ultimately one of my all time favorite chefs. However, this recipe was... disappointing, way way too much salt. I wonder if this was a typo, tablespoon vs. teaspoon. I was also wondering if there was also to much baking powder included I hope this recipe gets some TLC soon.Read more

    tylers buttermilk biscuits

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I have not made this recipe yet, but have made several of tylers recipes and they have been great. I have never written a... review before but have read several. Early on I realized that using table salt was not the same as using kosher or sea salt. Tyler used kosher salt most of the times in his recipes. If you use table salt in place of kosher salt, you have to use alot less. Maybe this will help .Read more

I haven't made these but I'm watching this episode right now and he said "Use a whole tablespoon of salt, we want these to... have a lot of flavor" or something like that. Eek!Read more
