Ingredients

  • Kosher salt
  • 3 pounds green beans, trimmed of stem end
  • 1/2 cup skin on sliced almonds
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 large onions, sliced thin
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Fill a large high sided skillet with some water, adding enough to be just shy of the rim of the pan by about 1 inch. Place over high heat and bring up to boil; add a big pinch of salt and the green beans. Cook for about 5 minutes, the beans should still be crisp. Drain the beans and then run them under some cold water to stop them from cooking. Reserve the beans while you start the onions.

Return the skillet you cooked the beans in to the cook top over medium heat. Add the almonds and toast stirring every now and then until golden, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the almonds from the skillet and reserve. Return the skillet to the heat and add the butter and olive oil and heat until the butter has melted. Add the onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook stirring frequently until the onions caramelize, 20 to 25 minutes. Add the thyme, and cook for another 5 minutes. Add the cooked cooled green beans and almonds, and stir well to combine. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

I made these green beans tonite for dinner and they were amazing! I cooked my beans longer because my kids like them a little... softer. Cheap to make and fantastic to eat! I will be making these again and again!Read more

    Best-ever green beans

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This recipe is absolutely the best. I've made it to go along with steak, grilled salmon and even a pasta dish. It is... wonderful, and very easy to prepare. Everyone asks for the recipe when I serve this dish. This is a winner.Read more

    Another prize recipe from Tyler

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
We had these for dinner last night with our creamy mashed potatoes. We were bowled over. This will be the only way we will... have green beans from now on. I would rearrange the cooking order of the ingredients though. I would toast the almonds and fry the onions ahead of time. Then cook the beans and stir them into the olive oil and butter with the almonds and heat them all together. It's too much going on to try to do it all at once. Thanks Tyler for a great new recipeRead more

    Very Good...

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made these the other night to go with steak. They are delicious! It takes a while to carmelize the onions but it is worth... it. I had to substitute walnuts for the almonds but they were great with the beans. I also added a bit of garlic with the onions. These are delicious and a must try! These definately will be a repeat!Read more
