I have used balsamic vinegar instead of red wine, with wonderful results!! Even my kids liked the strawberries!!!!

After reading about others disliking the overly alcohol flavor of the strawberries, I modified this recipe successfully. I found that an entire bottle of wine was overkill for that amount of strawberries considering how much liquid you get from strawberries when they macerate with just sugar. What I did was use one cup of blush zinfandel (so the flavor was less harsh than a red but still fruity and delicious as substitution. I also used regular honey at the same amount. This substitution worked lovely and provided plenty of liquid for drizzling over icecream, shortcakes, and other goodies. I almost think that there is an error in the recipe since I did not see the episode--but who knows.
